The Los Angeles Rams have already seen some minor controversy about how they have used their tight ends this season, but one former general manager believes that they would be a player in a potential trade pursuit of another.
Pat Freiermuth, currently of the Pittsburgh Steelers, could be made available before the trade deadline, which falls on November 4 this year.
Moreover, the Rams could land the sixth-year veteran for relatively cheap.
Rams Floated as Trade Destination for Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth

“I don’t know what’s going on with Freiermuth. A team would definitely trade for him like the Commanders or Rams,” an anonymous former general manager said, per 93.7 The Fan’s Andrew Fillipponi posted on X on October 9. “I think the Steelers could get a 3rd or 4th for him.”
This Heavy Sports trade proposal would see the Rams send Fillipponi’s suggested package
Rams get:
- Pat Freiermuth
Steelers get:
- 2026 third-round draft pick
The Rams’ offense enters Week 6 ranked second in total offense, but is second in scoring. A trade for Freiermuth could help boost their 24th-ranked red-zone offense, which has converted 11 of its 21 tries (52.4%) on the season.

Freiermuth, who turns 27 on October 25, has seven receptions for 65 yards through four games in 10 targets, with one start. His 1.8 catches and 16.3 receiving yards per game would both be career-low marks across an entire season.
He had 65 grabs for 653 yards and 7 touchdowns on 78 targets in 2024 and a 227-2,255-18 line for his career.
There are significant doubts about his availability, though.
“I don’t think he’s going to get dealt in the next month but stranger things have happened,” the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittipaldo said, per Fillipponi in another post on October 9.
Freiermuth is signed through 2028 on a four-year, $48.4 million contract extension.
Per Over The Cap, the Rams have $15.6 million in cap space, more than enough to fit the prorated portion of Freiermuth’s $12.9 million cap hit. However, the Steelers signed Freiermuth to the extension in September 2024.
“Those of you wanting to trade Pat Freiermuth probably should know that doing so during this season would result in $2.1M in 2025 dead money and another $6.3M in 2026 dead money,” Steelers Depot posted on X on October 9. “If you are wanting MUTH gone that bad, the mostly likely time would be next spring via trade before his $1.5M roster bonus is due on March 15.”
Rams Have Several Needs as Trade Deadline Approaches
GettyLos Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay looks on against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Rams have starting TE Tyler Higbee, who was a member of their Super Bowl team in 2021, and former Seattle Seahawks fourth-round pick (2020) Colby Parkinson, both of whom are dealing with injuries, and 2023 fifth-rounder Davis Allen.
The Rams also used a second-round draft pick in 2025 on Terrance Ferguson, who has hardly seen the field this season.
Then, there are the Rams’ question marks at cornerback and their multitude of other injuries.
At tailback, they have Kyren Williams and drafted Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round this year, but they lost starting cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to a broken collarbone, and could explore outside options there.
Any of those items could push a trade for Freiermuth further off the Rams’ radar, if that is something they would indeed entertain, as the anonymous former executive suggested.
