Rams Projected to Land Matthew Stafford Replacement After Massive People-Mover

The Los Angeles Rams made a future-focused trade with the Atlanta Falcons during the 2025 draft that seemingly set them up to select a quarterback in 2026. ESPN’s Matt Miller projects the Rams to use that pick on another need and land their future QB1 in Drew Allar.

Miller projects the Rams to use the No. 27 overall pick on the Penn State star.

Allar is a “big-armed” QB with “good mobility,” but he has yet to “put it all together,” Miller wrote on June 30.

“With Matthew Stafford entering his age-37 season, this would be a good spot for the Rams to pick his eventual successor,” Miller wrote. Allar … has the arm to make any throw and can escape crowded pockets but goes through cold stretches where his decision-making and accuracy drop off. His development in 2024, in which he increased his completion percentage from 59.9% to 66.5%, is encouraging and suggests that more improvement is on the way.”

Allar threw for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions for the Nittany Lions in 2024.

The Rams could even buy up to a year or so for Allar to develop, with Jimmy Garoppolo an option if Stafford retires after the 2025 season. 2023 fourth-round pick Stetson Bennett IV and former undrafted free agent Dresser Winn are the only other quarterbacks on the Rams’ roster.

Drew Allar Could Blend Best of Both Worlds for Rams

The 33rd Team’s Kyle Crabbs broke down Allar’s game before the QB officially returned to Penn State for his senior season, and described an “ideal scheme fit, role” scenario that matches what the Rams offer.

Moreover, Allar could be the dual-threat QB1 that Rams head coach Sean McVay has never had during his tenure, though he has only sparingly put it on display.

The young prospect rushed for 302 yards and 6 touchdowns on 96 carries last season.

“Allar has perhaps the best tools of any quarterback eligible for the 2025 Draft. He has prototypical physical gifts — ranging from his powerful arm, prototypical size, and ability to extend plays as a traditional pocket passer,” Crabbs wrote in December 2024.

“Teams looking for a plug-and-play starter should tread carefully, but those with a consistent system and coaching structure should not wait too long in their bids to get their hands on him. He has all of the position’s uncoachable elements and, in the right environment, could grow and develop into an impact starter.”

Crabbs believes Allar is a “developmental starter with undeniable gifts.” His environment will matter, though, with Crabbs noting Allar will need “patience and time” to learn the nuances of the offense.

Still, Allar’s ability to push the ball down the field is a strength and would fit the Rams.

Mock Draft Sees Rams Build Out Roster With Falcons’ 1st-Round Pick

Before getting Allar to LA, Miller has the Rams using the ‘flexibility” of the No. 9 pick from the Falcons on Alabama tackle Kadyn Proctor, a massive road-grader and potential replacement for starting right tackle and Super Bowl champion, Rob Havenstein.

Proctor, listed on the Crimson Tide’s website at 6-foot-7 and 360 pounds, “plays with physicality and a mean streak” but has a tendency to lose focus.

“Consistency” is the key for Proctor, in Miller’s estimation.

“Proctor would already be one of the NFL’s strongest players upon entering the league,” Miller wrote. “But Proctor isn’t always on his A-game and can run hot-and-cold. The Rams are looking for an heir apparent to Rob Havenstein at right tackle and Proctor has more potential than any lineman in this class.”
