Rams QB Matthew Stafford Reveals Telling Detail About HC Sean McVay

Sometimes, Matthew Stafford has to tell Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay when he has heard enough.

The Pro Bowl quarterback and 2021 Super Bowl champion spoke candidly about his relationship with McVay on gamedays and the one habit the coach has that can get to him in the moment.

They have even developed a specific signal.

Rams legend Aaron Donald asked Stafford about a viral clip of McVay delivering a lengthy set of instructions, much to the QB’s lighthearted chagrin.

Stafford could be heard repeatedly telling the huddle that McVay was “still going” after he had already changed from one play to another. Stafford repeatedly told McVay, “I got it,” and to “please stop.” He said it was “unbelievable.”

“TV timeouts are tough,’” Stafford told Donald on “The Inner Circle Podcast” on November 12.

“He’s got open mic, and we are not up against the clock. And he is just going, ‘Take your finger off it. Take your finger off it. The best part about is, he’s giving all these coaching points that are like Day 1 coaching points for all our guys. ‘Hey, if this guy’s doing this, you make sure you snatch him. If he’s here, you’re coming down.’ All this. And I’m just having to relay, and all the guys can hear it because it’s quiet during the TV timeout. They can just hear the noise coming in, and they’re all laughing at me.”

Stafford said that he has “developed” a hand gesture to alert McVay when he has had enough instruction.

“I usually give him that [hand signal]. And every once in a while, it turns over to something else. To, ‘Please, be quiet!’” Stafford said. “He is the man. I love it. And now he just messes with me. After that clip came out, he’s like, ‘This is the part I love where you … can’t talk back, and I’m just going to keep talking to you right now.’ I’m like [shakes head]. But it’s a lot of fun.”

McVay takes every opportunity he gets to praise Stafford, and this season is no different amid the QB’s MVP-caliber campaign. McVay is 87-54 as the Rams’ head coach and 41-25 with Stafford as his QB1, and improvement from a .613 winning percentage to .621.

Matthew Stafford Reveals Backstory of Funky Huddle Stance

In detailing his in-game banter with and about McVay, Stafford revealed how his huddle posture came to be.

“All the guys make fun of me. I get in this like super long, one-leg-out-the-huddle stance now. So, I used to get on a knee. And I, after I think it was 2015 or 2016, I’m like, ‘Golly, guys. My knee’s killing me after the season, my right knee. And they go and take an MRI, and they’re like, ‘Your entire kneecap is like a bone bruise.

“I’m like, ‘I don’t even know what happened.’ They’re like, ‘You just knee it every day, every practice, every game. And I’m like, ‘All right. So, I’m going to stop doing this.’ So, I get in this super long lunge now that everybody makes fun of me for. “

If the switch allowed Stafford to play well this long, McVay and the Rams will certainly take it.
