Rams Urged Not To Trade Unused Rookie

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is in just a week and many teams are making moves to prepare for the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Rams currently have a 5-2 record and are considered a contender for the Super Bowl. LA recently traded for cornerback Roger McCreary from the Tennessee Titans to help strengthen their secondary for the postseason.

While the Rams front office has made moves to strengthen the roster, other teams could be calling LA to make trades and bolster their weaknesses.

One NFL writer believes that if Los Angeles were to make trades, they shouldn’t trade this one rookie.

Rams Urged To Keep Rook

The Los Angeles Rams selected tight end Terrance Ferguson from Oregon with their first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft in the second round.

Ferguson has not been used on offense much so far this season, which leaves the question of whether his future continues elsewhere.

Sports Illustrated’s Andy Quach urges the Rams not to trade the rookie as he still has much to connect with the rest of the offense.

“The Los Angeles Rams have been able to give themselves a quick turnaround after their 2022 Super Bowl run with some shrewd drafting, shoring up their depth with some impressive young talent. The team may have found its next offensive cornerstone in Terrance Ferguson,” Quach wrote.

“Coming from a loaded tight end class, he was taken by LA with the 46th-overall pick in the second round out of Oregon. Playing behind Tyler Higbee, Ferguson hasn’t had a ton of opportunities yet, but he’s capitalized on them when they do come his way. On the season, he’s caught two of his four targets for 52 yards and a touchdown. He looks like an explosive weapon that they’ll want to continue to develop and extend their contendership with quarterback Matthew Stafford.”

The Rams currently have four players in the tight end group, with Ferguson at the bottom of the back. In front of the second-round pick of the 2025 Draft are Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen.

Higbee is the second-longest tenured player on the Rams, with a great knowledge of how playcaller and head coach Sean McVay runs the offense. Parkinson is currently in the second year of his three-year, $22.5 million contract with the organization. Allen is in his third year with the team after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 Draft.

Ferguson has the least amount of experience and knowledge in the NFL, which could play a factor in why the 46th overall pick in this year’s draft isn’t being used as much.

Terrance Ferguson Likely To Stay

In five games played for the Los Angeles Rams, Terrance Ferguson has only logged 52 receiving yards on two catches.

While he hasn’t been the first option out of the tight end group, head coach Sean McVay said that Ferguson will have an increased role in the future.

“Terrance is doing a good job,” McVay said, via Sports Illustrated. “I think he certainly showed why he’s capable. You know, the one opportunity he got – and he was separating on some other routes where he could have got the football – they ended up busting some coverages where he might have been the primary.”

“I think Terrance is only going to improve and get more opportunities as we go because he showed – he’s got that capability that we love so much coming out of Oregon. The way they use – he’s able to go and make a big time play for us last night.”

The rookie from Oregon was dealing with a groin injury during training camp, which can help explain why he hasn’t received many opportunities on offense.
