Ravens Rookie Teddye Buchanan Sends Strong Message on His First Training Camp

“I mean, kinda everywhere,” said Baltimore Ravens rookie LB Teddye Buchanan said on Thursday when asked where he’s made the biggest strides since joining the team. “I feel like coming in fresh, learning the defense — y’know, it’s a lot to take in at once, but just as time goes on you’re going to progress naturally. And just working hard, taking it day by day, I think I’ve been able to grow in every aspect. Especially understanding the defense, getting used to the speed of the NFL, really overall just improving.”

“Yeah, I would definitely say that,” Buchanan continued, answering a question on if he felt like he improved from his first to his second preseason game. “Kinda getting my feet wet that first preseason game, then getting to feel comfortable and the whole defense, whole team was able to play really well that second preseason game. So yeah, just continuing to build every single day.”

Buchanan’s been one of the Ravens’ preseason stars, with five tackles and a quarterback hit in his two games, in addition to showcasing an advanced understanding of the defense for a rookie. He’s fighting for a spot on Baltimore’s roster behind starting linebackers Roquan Smith and Trenton Simpson, and his strong preseason has certainly helped his case.

“Yeah, Coach ‘Tuc, he’s an amazing instructor, amazing man, y’know,” Buchanan said, in reference to working with Ravens’ inside linebackers coach Tyler Santucci. “He looks out for us as players and as people. So it’s been an honor to work with him — I know it’s his rookie year in the NFL as well, so getting to through that together has been a really cool experience and I’ve learning a ton from him in a really short time.”

“Absolutely. I mean, yeah, Roquan’s list of accolades goes on and on, so [being] able to work with a guy like that is invaluable for me as a rookie,” Buchanan said on working with the All-Pro Smith. “And just getting to see how he thinks about the game, the processes he goes through, has helped me a ton and helped me grow really fast.”

Teddye Buchanan On the Ravens’ Star-Studded Roster

“I mean, absolutely,” he said on whether all the stars on the team pushed him to try and keep up with them. “When you’ve got great teammates around you that’s just gonna push you to be better. That’s a great part of being on this team — I have to elevate my game every single day. And you know, ‘iron sharpens iron,’ so it’s good to go against great players on offense and have great players around me on defense to really just bring the whole team up every single day.”

“I think every aspect of the game — special teams, defense — for me, I’m just focused on the process of every single day, improving every single day,” Buchanan said on how he can make the roster and earn an on-field role for the Ravens. “I’m pretty short-sighted in that aspect, just doing what I can today and tomorrow to get better and let the rest take care of itself.”
