The New York Mets have undoubtedly had a lackluster start to the offseason. After all, the club lost two key players, Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, to free agency. Alonso led the Mets in RBIs and batting average in 2025, while Diaz recently collected the National League Reliever of the Year award.
On top of these massive losses, New York also traded away Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil. Although they may not be superstars, the duo has been key figures in the Mets lineup for years. Both players recorded WARs of at least 2.0 in 2025, something that only six total Mets hitters reached on the year. The moves have mostly been met with mixed reviews by the fanbase.
While both Nimmo and McNeil have value on the field, the moves were likely done for other reasons. According to an anonymous MLB exec, the Mets have serious issues behind the scenes. “What they’ve done tells you how big a s— show their clubhouse was,” the rival executive told The Athletic. “The guessing is over. It was a disaster.”
Multiple people inside the Mets organization essentially agree with the outsider’s assessment. A longtime New York scout told the aforementioned news outlet that the club is clearly making an effort to change the clubhouse culture. Another unnamed person in the team went on to claim that president of baseball operations David Stearns “tidied things up in our house.”
Political Conflicts May Have Helped Fracture New York Mets Clubhouse
GettyFrancisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil have been known to clash in recent years.
Multiple sources previously reported potential issues involving McNeil and Nimmo. The New York Post revealed that McNeil and star shortstop Francisco Lindor had a heated exchange during a game against the Philadelphia Phillies in June. The outlet also claimed that the infielders clashed in 2021, which led to Lindor grabbing McNeil by the throat.
Fans believe the shortstop made a cryptic Instagram post regarding the second baseman’s trade on December 22 as well. McNeil, however, is not the only player with whom Lindor has had issues. Mike Puma reported in November that the shortstop had a “chilly” relationship with superstar Juan Soto throughout 2025.
A political beef may have even sealed Nimmo’s fate with the Mets. According to New York radio host Mike Francesa, the outfielder’s positive stance on Donald Trump rubbed Lindor the wrong way. “The Nimmo-Lindor thing, my understanding, was political, had to do with Trump,” stated Francesa. “One side liked Trump, one side didn’t like Trump.”
Mets Expected to Make Multiple Additions to the Roster in Coming Weeks
Now that the Mets have seemingly taken care of in-house problems, they need to add to their lineup. New York has already essentially replaced McNeil with Marcus Semien. The second baseman was acquired in the deal that sent Nimmo to the Texas Rangers. Nevertheless, they also need to sign an outfielder and potentially another right-handed bat.
The Mets are involved in the chase for Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger. Signing either slugger would be a massive move by the club. Both stars, however, are lefties, and New York would also need to acquire a righty at some point. Starting pitching remains an area of concern for the club as well.
