Well, that didn’t take long.
The New York Jets waived wide receiver Xavier Gipson this week, and he landed on his feet. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero shared on social media that the New York Giants were awarded Gipson off waivers on Thursday, September 11.
“Gipson was waived after a costly miscue in Sunday’s opener against Pittsburgh. Now, a fresh start,” Pelissero added.

“In two-plus seasons, Gipson fumbled 10 times in various roles. He finished with 27 receptions for 268 yards and one touchdown,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed.

“The Giants are adding Xavier Gipson. Worth noting that one of their KRs, Wan’Dale Robinson, is dealing with an ankle injury that happened on a kickoff. So [it] could be an immediate role for Gipson,” ESPN’s Jordan Raanan posted.

After Gipson was waived by the Jets, he posted, “Thank you New York” on his Instagram story (via Jets Media). Little did he know that in about 24 hours, he would be moving right down the road.

Coach’s Prediction Came True Very Quickly
Head coach Aaron Glenn broke his silence on the decision to part ways with Gipson on Wednesday, September 10.
“Xavier is going to be a player who plays in this league. I know he is going to correct it because of who he is as a person. I just felt like it was time to make a change. Between me and Moug [Jets general manager Darren Mougey], we had conversations about it and we made the change,” Glenn said.
Jets Are Going to Have to Call an Audible at the Returner Position
Gipson is off the roster. Former All-Pro return man Kene Nwangwu is battling a hamstring issue that Cimini said on the “Flight Deck” podcast could force him to miss a few games.
That removes the Jets’ top two returners from Week 1 off the menu.
The only other Jets player who fielded a kick return in the season opener was rookie wide receiver Arian Smith. He had one opportunity and returned it 31 yards. He will be an option heading into the Week 2 Buffalo Bills game.
Two other possibilities that make sense are running back Isaiah Davis and Isaiah Williams, who the Jets stole off the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad this week.
A fresh start for the Jets on special teams.
