MLB’s hot stove season is starting to get going, and the Boston Red Sox are solidifying themselves as one of the more active teams in the trade market. At the end of November, the Red Sox traded for Sonny Gray, and on Thursday, they traded for another starting pitcher to help improve the team’s rotation depth.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting that the Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a trade that sends starter Johan Oviedo to the Red Sox in return for one of Boston’s top prospects in Jhonstynxon Garcia. In total, it’s a five-player deal, and prospects Adonys Guzman and Tyler Samaniego are going to the Red Sox. The Pirates will get Jesus Travieso to pair with the “Password” Garcia.

Boston Completes Second Trade of MLB Offseason
Craig Breslow and the rest of the Red Sox front office are cooking in the early going of this MLB hot stove season. This is now the second meaningful trade this offseason for Boston, and in a similar fashion to the Gray trade, it is for a starting pitcher.
Johan Oviedo is a 27-year-old starter who posted a 3.57 ERA in 2025 over 40.1 innings and nine starts. He was sidelined all of the 2024 season, but posted a 4.31 ERA over 32 starts and 177.1 innings pitched.
Here are the full trade details:
Boston receives Johan Oviedo, Tyler Samaniego, and Adonys Guzman.
Pittsburgh receives Jhostynxon Garcia and Jesus Travieso.

Garcia played in 81 games at the AAA level in 2025 and hit 18 home runs with an .833 OPS. He received very limited playing time with the Red Sox big-league club (5 games, .143 AVG, one hit)
Oviedo is a tall (6’6) right-handed starter with back-end of the rotation capabilities. He was acquired by the Pirates at the 2022 trade deadline. He came up with the St. Louis Cardinals and debuted in 2020.

This Trade May Be A Sign of More to Come for Boston
The Boston Red Sox are clearly all-in for this offseason, and this trade may be a sign that Breslow and company are trying to win the offseason.
The AL East has been a battlefield this offseason, with all of the most noteworthy moves coming from either the Red Sox, Blue Jays, or Orioles. It is a true arms race, and Boston is also being linked to some of the top free agents (Pete Alonso, Munetaka Murakami, Kyle Schwarber).
If the Red Sox are preparing to lose Alex Bregman, they sure are making up for it in the pitching staff. It’s unclear at this moment where Oviedo stands in the fold of Boston’s rotation, but they wouldn’t trade for him if they didn’t see a capable starter.
Paired with ace Garrett Crochet, Boston’s other starter options include Sonny Gray, Brayan Bello, Payton Toll, Kyle Harrison, Kutter Crawford, Connelly Early, and now Johan Oviedo.
