Red Sox-Mets Trade Pitch Lands Mark Vientos and Offloads $90 Million Bust to New York

The Boston Red Sox and New York Mets have been two of the most active teams in MLB in terms of making meaningful trades this offseason. But does each franchise have one more in store?

A recent massive mock trade idea by Bleacher Report has the two sides linking up on a four-player deal that includes the likes of Mark Vientos and Masataka Yoshida. Yoshida has been the subject of trade rumors before, but it might be hard for Boston to find a suitor to pick up his five-year, $90 million deal. As for Mets’ infielder Mark Vientos, he enjoyed a breakout 2024 season, but regressed in 2025. All the additions New York made this offseason in the infield could leave Vientos without a spot.

Here are the full details of the proposed trade by Bleacher Report between the Mets and Boston Red Sox:

“Trade Proposal: Boston Red Sox get 3B Mark Vientos, LHP Sean Manaea, cash; New York Mets get DH/OF Masataka Yoshida, LHP Connelly Early”

Getting the Mets to take on Masataka Yoshida is a huge success in this trade idea for the Red Sox. Masa played in just 55 games last season, and appears to have a power ceiling of about 15 home runs max. Giving up Connelly Early isn’t something Boston wants to do, but he would be replenished by Sean Manaea, who is another Mets player trying to regain his 2024 form.

It’s really just unclear at this moment where Masataka Yoshida would play, so trading him might be the only logical option, and the only logical destination that might actually take some of his contract is New York.

Why This Deal Makes Sense for Boston?

If Boston were to make this deal, or at least think about it, both their infield and starting rotation would get an upgrade.

While it would be difficult to give up Early, offloading Yoshida’s $90 million contract is the key here, and obtaining an arm like Sean Manaea, who has a wealth of experience over Early, might also pay dividends.

Opening Day is still a few weeks away in MLB, but with players like Mark Vientos and Masataka Yoshida, who don’t have real starting spots on their squads, it’s no surprise they are floated around as trade bait in these hypothetical deals.
