Red Sox Phenom Breaks Silence on Costly Throwing Mistakes

Boston Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony did not miss words when it came to his error late in Monday’s 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He spoke to the media following the game, and pointedly talked about his decision on one particular play. The Boston Herald’s Greg Dudek reported this.

The game was tied at five, with two outs and two on in the top of the eighth inning. Garrett Mitchell lined a ball to left field, on a play where the Red Sox wanted to limit the damage. Anthony fielded the ball and tried to throw out Bryce Turang at home plate. A solid throat would’ve kept the game tied. As Turang rounded third, Anthony’s throw was errant. The ball sailed and went to the backstop, scoring both Turang and Christian Yelich.

The throw was a microcosm of what has been a difficult start to the season for the Red Sox. Anthony did not take things lightly after the game, and fully placed the blame on himself.

“It was a terrible throw. Didn’t have a shot with that throw. Got to be better. It’s terrible.”

“I’m doing everything I can pregame and just struggling to get a grip,” Anthony added. “At the end of the day, there’s no excuse. It’s terrible. It’s bad baseball, and it’s on me.”

Red Sox Star Has Stuggled With Fielding

Fielding has been a problem for Anthony to start the season. Most recently, Anthony was charged with the throwing error against the San Diego Padres. Fernando Tatis Junior hit a ball in Anthony’s direction. Anthony’s subsequent throw missed the catcher, allowing the runner to advance and ultimately score the go- ahead run in Saturday’s contest.

There was another instance of the season-opening series against the Cincinnati Reds. Anthony struggled to field the ball in the game. A stronger throw could have prevented a walk-off single. Instead, the Reds were able to take the game.

This recent stretch has almost equaled his 2025 season to this point. He had two total errors last season and had a. 989 fielding percentage. As of right now, he has two errors, and a. 923 fielding percentage. Anthony played in a total of 71 games for the Red Sox last year.

Slow Start At The Plate For Red Sox Star

Anthony has managed to get off to a slow start at the plate too. He is heading. 256 with one home run and two RBIs. The returns at the plate have not been great yet either, although it is still relatively early in the season. On top of this, the cold weather has certainly not done the hitters any favors. Even still, Anthony was thought to be a key piece to this Red Sox offense, and a solid early start would definitely benefit an offense that is struggling.

There is certainly time left to be had in the season; It is not necessarily time to push the panic button yet. Nevertheless, Anthony’s fielding struggles are a concerning trend.

He was a designated hitter in 18 games last season, and the Red Sox were able to utilize his bat while not having to worry about his struggles in the field. One has to wonder if putting Anthony as a designated hitter is something that will come up again over the course of the season.

In the meantime, Anthony and the rest of the Red Sox are undergoing growing pains. It has certainly not been ideal as of late.
