Red Sox Predicted to Land $110 Million Superstar All-Star in Free Agency

The MLB Winter Meetings are officially underway in Orlando. It’s going to be a busy week for a lot of teams in terms of free agency and trade talks. Will some of the game’s biggest free agents sign with their current team or find a new home for 2026?

There should be some clear answers to some of those questions by the end of the week. One name that continues to draw a lot of interest is New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso. It is not a guarantee that he returns to Queens with some teams lurking for him.

One of those teams is the Boston Red Sox. They have been linked to him for most of the offseason. MLB Network insider Jon Morosi mentioned that there is a 50/50 chance that Alonso is not in New York on Opening Day in March.

Mets Get Dire Warning on the Future of Pete Alonso

Morosi went on the MLB Network on Sunday night and discussed Alonso’s future with the Mets. While a return to New York is still a possibility, the odds are increasing that he may not.

“The team that is best positioned to sign Pete Alonso — not named the Mets — is the Boston Red Sox,” Morosi said. “There is a better than 50/50 chance Pete Alonso is not a New York Met on Opening Day. I’ve just got visions of how many home runs Pete Alonso might hit playing at Fenway Park.”

How does Alonso fit the Red Sox? They need a right-handed power bat in their lineup, and Alonso fits that. As Morosi said, Alonso could do some serious damage in 81 games at Fenway Park for Boston. Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reported that Boston is high on Alonso’s list of potential destinations.

“Pete Alonso seems like a perfect fit for the Sox. He’s a right-handed hitting first baseman with tremendous power who thrived in a big market. His wife, Haley, is a Boston native who grew up in Quincy. The couple met when Alonso was playing in the Cape Cod League. Alonso has told friends the Sox are high on his list,” Abraham wrote.

Red Sox Planning Out a Backup Alex Bregman Plan

Could the Red Sox bring Alex Bregman back and sign Alonso? Sure, but it’s not in Boston’s DNA to make that big of a splash in free agency lately. Alonso’s defense could be a red flag for the Red Sox.

“The 31-year-old Alonso is projected to land a four- or five-year deal at $28 million a year. But defensive metrics — particularly range — showed him to be one of the worst first basemen in the majors last season. He’s also a slow base runner,” wrote Abraham.

Triston Casas is recovering from an injury last year, which really hampered first base for the Red Sox. They tried a number of options, but didn’t get enough offense from the position. Alonso would solve that, and he could even DH for manager Alex Cora at times. ESPN’s Jorge Castillo predicted Alonso will sign in Boston. Last month, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN predicted Alonso to Boston for four years and $110 million. That number could end up being hire.

“Alonso is coming off a rebound All-Star season in which he clubbed 38 home runs with 126 RBIs, an NL-leading 41 doubles, and an .871 OPS for the Mets. Defensively, Alonso is below average, but he could split time with Triston Casas at first base and designated hitter,” Castillo wrote.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting week in Orlando, and it could be a big one for the Red Sox in terms of adding a much-needed right-handed power-hitter.
