Red Sox Trade Idea Lands 8-Time All-Star As Potential Alex Bregman Replacement

As MLB’s hot stove season ramps up, the Boston Red Sox are one of the most intriguing teams to follow across the league. After making a massive trade with the Cardinals for Sonny Gray to address the starting rotation, the next move for Boston is deciding what will happen at third base.

Of course, the Red Sox could re-sign third baseman Alex Bregman, but it’s unclear at this moment what his free agency demands look like. If the Red Sox are unable to retain Bregman, that could lead to the front office looking elsewhere to fill the huge void. Boston could link up again with the St. Louis Cardinals for Nolan Arenado, who is expected to be traded this offseason.

Could the Red Sox Trade For Nolan Arenado?

The Cardinals are expected to clean house this offseason, with multiple names like Nolan Arenado and Brendon Donovan firmly on the trade block.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported earlier this week that St. Louis is “open for business” and “Nolan Arenado is almost certain to waive his no-trade protection and move.”

So, could the new president of baseball operations for the Cardinals, Chaim Bloom, make another trade with the Red Sox, and what would it take?

In a massive deal like this, it would almost certainly take big league players to make this trade work. Two names that could pique the interest of St. Louis are Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida. Boston could also offer a top-5 prospect and a lower-level prospect to complete the deal.

Nolan Arenado is 34 years old and certainly nearing the end of his career, but many believe the eight-time All-Star may just need a change of scenery to get back to his former self, and playing in Fenway Park would be beneficial.

Nolan Arenado’s 2025 Season & Career

Nolan Arenado had a down season in 2025. He hit just .237 with 12 home runs and 18 doubles in 107 games. By the end of the 2025 season, Arenado wasn’t even an everyday player.

However, he still has so many accolades that are likely to carry him into the Hall of Fame. He led the NL in home runs three times during his time with the Colorado Rockies, and won 10 consecutive Gold Glove awards at third base from his rookie season (2013) to 2022.

He signed a massive nine-year, $275 million deal before the 2019 season and is set to be a free agent again in 2028.

If the Red Sox pull off a trade for Arenado, it means they did not retain Alex Bregman, and Arenado would serve as the team’s primary third baseman until his contract runs out.

As of now, there are no new reports regarding Alex Bregman’s free agency, but it will be one of the biggest storylines to follow in MLB this winter.
