Red Sox Trade Pitcher Amid Devers Trade Roster Remake

Friday will mark the first meeting between the Red Sox and the Giants this season, a nifty bit of timing considering we are less than a week removed from the seismic shift for both franchises that saw Boston ship star slugger Rafael Devers to San Francisco for a package of four players, including two pitchers who started for the Giants this season.

While the Red Sox brought on two prospects–James Tibbs and Jose Bello–who are a long way from the big leagues, it’s the additions of those two pitchers that are having the biggest impact on the roster here in the short term. Kyle Harrison is starting his tenure in Triple-A Worcester, and Jordan Hicks is on the injured list but should be available to pitch again soon.

And there figure to be more moves as the Red Sox have simultaneously dumped their best hitter while also thrusting themselves back into playoff contention in the American League. To add to that, the Red Sox completed a deal with the Dodgers on Friday, sending lefty relief pitcher Zach Penrod to L.A.

Red Sox Deal Zach Penrod

MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, who covers the Red Sox, reported on Friday that, “Red Sox have traded Zach Penrod to the Dodgers, sources say.”

Penrod has bounced through the minor leagues for the past eight years after signing as a 21-year-old free agent with the Rangers. He did not last long with Texas, as he injured his elbow and required Tommy John surgery in 2019. He stuck with the goal of making the big leagues, though, and spent three years recovering from the surgery and toiling in independent baseball.

He got a shot with the Red Sox in the summer of 2023, and worked his way through the system quickly, starting 2024 in Double-A Portland, spending a brief stint in Triple-A and finally making his debut in September last year.  He allowed one earned run in seven appearances in Boston in 2024.

But, to clear out space as the team reconfigures the pitching staff with its two new additions from the Devers trade, the Red Sox designated Penrod for assignment. They were able to find a home for him, though, by sending him to the Dodgers.

Penrod dealt with an elbow injury during spring training this winter, but had posted a 5.68 ERA in six appearances at Triple-A Worcester this year.
