Red Wings Trade Pitch Lands Canucks $38.5 Million Sniper

The Detroit Red Wings will soon be returning to game action, as they face off against the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 26 for their first contest since the Olympics ended. The Red Wings will be aiming to start the final portion of the 2025-26 season on the right foot by picking up a victory.

With the Red Wings getting back on the ice and the NHL Olympic roster freeze being lifted, there is no question that they need to be watched closely. The 2026 NHL trade deadline is just about here, and the Red Wings stand out as a team that should be looking to make moves. This is because they not only hold a playoff spot at this juncture of the season, but also have a lot of cap space to work with.

One of the Red Wings’ goals ahead of the deadline should be to add another skilled winger for their top six. When looking at trade candidates around the NHL, Vancouver Canucks forward Jake DeBrusk stands out as a very intriguing option for the Red Wings to consider.

Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that would have the Canucks send DeBrusk to the Red Wings in a big swap.

Red Wings Get:

  • Jake DeBrusk

Canucks Get:

  • 2026 Second-Round Pick
  • 2027 Fourth-Round Pick
  • Michael Rasmussen

Red Wings Have Been Linked to Canucks’ Jake DeBrusk

DeBrusk is one of the NHL’s top trade candidates at this point in the season. With the Canucks being at the very bottom of the NHL standings, they are ready to make moves, and DeBrusk is one of their clear trade chips.

The Fourth Period recently reported that the Canucks have made DeBrusk available for trade and that the Red Wings are among the teams that have expressed interest in the 2015 first-round pick.

“During last week’s DFO Rundown Insider Edition episode, Irfaan Gaffar first reported that DeBrusk was available and is also open to a change of scenery,” The Fourth Period wrote. “The Boston Bruins, Seattle Kraken and Detroit Red Wings are among the teams believed to have some interest in DeBrusk, who has jumped onto TFP’s latest Trade Watch List.”

With the Canucks making DeBrusk available, it is understandable that the Red Wings are interested in him. There is no question that he would give the Red Wings’ forward group a nice boost if acquired. This is because they are in need of another skilled left winger, and DeBrusk would give them just that if acquired.

Where DeBrusk Could Fit in the Red Wings’ Lineup

If the Red Wings acquired DeBrusk, he could slot nicely on their first line with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. However, due to this ability to play both wings, he could also fit virtually anywhere in Detroit’s top nine. DeBrusk’s offensive skill would also make him an option for Detroit’s power play if acquired.

DeBrusk would also be more than a rental for the Red Wings if acquired. This is because he has a $5.5 million cap hit until the completion of the 2030-31 season. In 56 games this season with Vancouver, he has 13 goals, 15 assists, and 28 points. This is after he scored a career-high 28 goals and recorded 48 points in 82 games last season with Vancouver.
