Report: Multiple NFL Teams Interested in Bill Belichick to Fill HC Vacancies

The age old debate among New England Patriots and NFL fans about who was more important to the Pats dynasty between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick has largely been decided in favor of Brady. Brady left New England and won another Super Bowl in Tampa Bay while Belichick toiled around in New England without any success and has now shouldered immense criticism for his work at the University of North Carolina this season.

However, despite his lack of success in the last five years between New England and UNC, there are still NFL executives who are interested in giving Belichick one more shot in the big leagues.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, at least two NFL teams are interested in talking to Belichick about filling their head coach voids.

Belichick’s final NFL season was in 2023, when he led the Patriots to a 4-13 record.

Multiple NFL Teams Interested in Belichick

Although Anderson did not specify which teams are interested in Belichick, the only two teams to fire their head coaches this season have been the New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans. Belichick was immediately brought up in rumors after Brian Daboll was fired in New York, largely because of his time there from 1979-1990 as defensive coordinator.

Belichick quickly dispersed these rumors when he released a statement.

“It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade,” Belichick said. “However, despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies.”

This was released at the height of the rumors in early November. At face value it seems like he isn’t interested in returning to the NFL, but this statement came in the midst of a trying season with UNC. He could very well have just released it to quiet the rumors and keep his players focused on the season at hand.

Belichick Has Plenty of Reason to Want to Return to NFL

In his five coaching seasons since Tom Brady left the New England Patriots, Belichick has done nothing to help his coaching legacy; in fact, he’s gone a long way towards tarnishing it. Outside of momentary success with rookie QB Mac Jones, he put losing products on the field in 2022 and 2023 in New England, and has struggled mightily at UNC amidst outside controversy surrounding his girlfriend Jordon Hudson.

So, maybe Belichick would return to try and salvage his legacy. Though he has the most Super Bowl wins of any head coach in NFL history, there’s still one record left to beat: the all-time wins record. Currently held by longtime Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula at 347, Belichick sits at 333, just 14 away from overtaking Shula.

There has been a market for him in the last few seasons, with rumors he may head to Atlanta, but he opted to give college a try. Belichick is a very particular head coach who wants to do things his own way, so it is tough for teams to align with his plans, but the market is back open for the legendary coach in the NFL.
