Rio Ferdinand singled out bargain basement signing Ayden Heaven for praise after Manchester United’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Chelsea.
Michael Carrick’s side bounced back from Monday night’s shock home defeat against Leeds United to secure a valuable three points that moved them closer to securing Champions League qualification.
Matheus Cunha’s 43rd minute goal, which came courtesy of yet another assist from the record-chasing Bruno Fernandes, ultimately proved the difference.
United’s victory, however, was founded on a makeshift defence which saw Heaven paired alongside Noussair Mazraoui.
With Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt all unavailable, United fans could’ve been forgiven for fearing the worst, but any doubts proved unfounded as the visitors coped comfortably with Chelsea’s underperforming attack.
Heaven has featured only sporadically under Michael Carrick having made a significant breakthrough under Ruben Amorim following his £1million transfer from Arsenal just over 12 months ago.
Arsenal were only able to secure a compensation fee for the 19-year-old given he was into the final six months of his scholarship terms and had declined the chance to sign a professional contract with his boyhood club.

Despite the restrictions placed on Arsenal, Ferdinand believes the Gunners made a serious error in failing to secure the services of another Hale End Academy graduate who appears set for a long and prosperous Old Trafford career on the evidence of last night’s display.
‘The recruitment has taken a battering at Manchester United over the last 10 years & rightly so,’ Ferdinand said on X. ‘But we need to shout out.
‘Ayden Heaven – £1m! Still lots to learn but called upon once again and delivered!’
Why did Ayden Heaven leave Arsenal to join Man Utd?
Given the trajectory of both United and Arsenal at the time of his arrival at Old Trafford, Heaven’s transfer decision appeared questionable but he explained the motives behind the move last summer.
‘The opportunities that the young players have got here in the past,’ Heaven told MUTV when asked why he decided to join Manchester United.
‘I think United had the most minutes given to teenagers last season [2023/24]. That convinced me to come here.
‘And the people and the fans here are quite loving, and I felt that when I was playing. They’re so supportive.’
Heaven also said an encouraging conversation with Amorim also helped convince him to make the move to Old Trafford.
‘He just said that our play style will suit me, because they play three at a back and I play on the left of the three, so that allows me to run with the ball,’ the teenager said.
‘That’s one of my strengths. And defending out wide is one of my strengths as well.’
Carrick, meanwhile, said he lives for moments like United’s landmark win in west London.
Liam Rosenior’s side hit the crossbar twice in the second half and despite dominating, seemed to lack belief as they lost a fourth Premier League game in a row without scoring.
There are no such concerns for the visitors, who need only two more wins to guarantee a return to Europe’s top competition.
‘They’re the moments we live for really, that’s why we’re in it,’ said Carrick. ‘For big games, important games, big performances.
‘And then for the supporters to feel it, it gives me a lot of satisfaction when I can be part of that and see all the people enjoying it so much. That’s the beauty of football and the pure form of it.’
He added: ‘It was an important win for us tonight in different ways, coming through the suspensions and the injuries, Lenny pulling out quite late and having to adapt.
‘The boys take so much credit for that. And the coaches in terms of putting the plan together and adapting over the last couple of days.
‘There’s a lot of things to be proud of tonight. We can play a little bit better at times, but I thought it was a game for a result and we managed to find it.’
