Roger Federer Officially Reaches Billionaire Status

Roger Federer, the first man to win 100 singles matches at a Grand Slam and the player with the most Wimbledon singles titles in men’s tennis history, is now a member of the three-comma club.

On Friday, Forbes reported that thanks in combination to his lucrative off-court sponsorships from brands like Uniqlo, Mercedes-Benz and Rolex, and a major investment in On, the all-time great is now officially a billionaire.

According to the outlet, Federer made over $1 billion before taxes throughout his career spanning more than two decades; however, it was his investment in On that helped fuel his climb to billionaire status.

In 2019, prior to retirement, Federer reached out to On, a Swiss footwear company specializing in running shoes, about a partnership. The two sides wound up agreeing to a deal that saw Federer purchase a 3% equity stake in the company.

Throughout the final years of his historic career, Federer wore On shoes, allowing him to still fulfill the requirements of his clothing sponsorship with Uniqlo, while helping fuel On’s growth. Once the company went public in 2021, Federer’s 3% stake turned into more than $375 million, according to Forbes.

Now, despite the fact that the Swiss legend is no longer competing, he finds himself among other famed athletes like Michael Jordan, Floyd Mayweather, and Tiger Woods in the three-comma club.

Federer Set to Return For Shanghai Celebrity Doubles Event

Just weeks before Forbes reported that Roger Federer is officially a billionaire, reports emerged indicating that the 20-time Grand Slam champion would be competing in a celebrity mixed doubles event at the upcoming Rolex Shanghai Masters tournament in October.

Earlier this month, the tournament released a video announcing the news of Federer and Friends Celebrity Doubles Match, with the former world No. 1 stating:

“I am really happy to be returning to Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters. Shanghai has always been a special place for me with great fans, unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game.”

Federer notably won the tournament twice, first in 2014, and again in 2017. To date, he remains just one of seven men to have won the tournament. Additionally, he won the ATP Finals in Shanghai in both 2006, and 2007.

The news of Federer and Friends hitting Shanghai this year notably comes on the heels of the Swiss star revealing back in April that he hopes to begin playing exhibitions in 2026.

From the sounds of things, however, he simply couldn’t wait.

Roger Federer Hoping To Fill Stadiums Once Again

Back in April, months before it was announced that he would be playing a celebrity doubles event in Shanghai, Federer sat down for an interview with TNT Sports where he teased a return to exhibitions.

As he explained at the time, he missed training several times a week, and hoped to sell out some stadiums with exhibitions:

“Honestly, I would love to play some more tennis again. Enough with the golf already for a moment now, I’ve played so much. But no seriously, I would love to start playing like two-three times a week again and hopefully, get myself back on an exhibition court. Maybe fill up a few nice stadiums around the world. I have no plans yet but I know that the training part is- I miss it a little bit to be honest because I haven’t played a whole lot since I retired.

“I think my body needed a little break and maybe my mind also a little bit. I’ve played with my kids, you know but I’d really love to practice a little bit for myself as well. So I’ll do that as I keep on traveling and hopefully you’ll get to see me in an exhibition soon.

Now when fans see Federer return to the court in Shanghai, he will be stepping on court for the first time as a billionaire.
