Ruben Amorim has threatened to step down as Manchester United head coach if the team continue in the same wretched vein of form next season.
The Red Devils plummeted to 16th in the Premier League table following a miserable 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham, with Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen on target at Old Trafford.
The loss – a second in succession in the top flight – was compounded by a concerning injury to Leny Yoro in the second half, though Amorim said he was hopeful the Frenchman could make a speedy recovery at his post-match press conference.
Amorim has never been one to shy away from the bleak reality of United’s malaise and the Portuguese was typically candid as he faced the media, accusing his players of a distinct lack of ‘urgency’ throughout their league campaign.
‘Of course, it’s a different competition, but in the Europa League we don’t play quite well, but have a little bit of that urgency,’ a visibly frustrated Amorim told reporters.

‘We cannot lose the games, we have to win it. We managed to find a way to win the games.
‘If Athletic Bilbao have a player sent off, we take advantage of that. We are so focussed.
‘You see in these games in the Premier League, sometimes we are not focussed and we don’t have that feeling that we have to win to get to the next stage, like we have in the Europa League so it is something that is mentally in our team.
‘I have that feeling that there is that lack of urgency in everything we do, so it’s a big concern.’
Astonishingly, Amorim said he would be prepared to step aside should United’s struggles continue into next season.
‘I don’t want to talk about players. I’m talking about myself, the culture in the club, the culture in the team,’ he added.
‘I have that feeling, we need to change that and we need to be really strong in the summer and be brave because we will not have the next season like this.
‘If we start like this, or if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different persons.’
Amorim believes the ‘biggest problem’ that United must change is his side’s apparent acceptance of repeated failure in the Premier League.
‘I think it’s quite similar to some games we had here, against Wolves it was a little bit the same,’ the United boss explained.
‘We create more chances than the opponent but the lack of urgency to protect our goal in the few times that West Ham was near our box… we had a lack of urgency.
‘We were near the box and we had a lack of urgency. We need to be more aggressive.
‘If you cannot score in the first ball, the second ball, if we cross the ball and are aggressive, we can score.
‘We had a lack of pace, we have to do so much better and for me the biggest concern is that feeling that it is okay: we cannot change our position so much so it is okay.
‘That is the biggest problem in this club at the moment because we are losing the feeling of a massive club. It’s the end of the world to lose a game at home. I think that is the biggest concern in our club.’
Asked how he feels when looking at United’s league position, Amorim replied: ‘How the manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position: embarrassed.
‘It’s hard to accept and everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here.
‘Everybody is thinking about the final. The final is not the issue in this club, we have bigger things to think and we have to change a lot of things in the end of the season.’
