The New York Giants are really hoping for a rebound this season, and for good reason. The team had a 3-14 record in 2024 and parted ways with longtime quarterback Daniel Jones, so it was a turbulent year for them, to say the least. But, that’s all in the past, and now, it’s time for the team to move forward with star quarterback Russell Wilson.
Wilson, of course, comes to the Giants with lots of great history. He has played in two Super Bowls during his career, Super Bowl XLVIII and Super Bowl XLIX, and won with the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. But, since Wilson is one of the older quarterbacks in the league and likely nearing retirement, some if the Giants camp may be worried.
Now, a new announcement will likely calm some of those fears about Wilson and what kind of shape he’s in heading into the new season.
Russell Wilson News is Fantastic for the New York Giants
For those worried about Wilson not being on the top of his game, don’t worry. In a June 27 piece for PFF, Mason Cameron gives some interesting statistics about the NFL’s top quarterbacks, and Wilson beats out some of the biggest names on this tally.
What’s cool is that these stats are for the 2024 season, so it shows that Wilson is still on top of his game. When it comes to quarterback stats for players under 2.5 seconds, Wilson is ranked No. 2 only behind Joe Burrow. His passing grade in that area was a 92.4.
“Despite missing time early in the year, Russell Wilson looked like his vintage self during his lone season in Pittsburgh, delivering one of the cleanest deep balls in the league with consistency,” Cameron said in the piece. “His 8.5% big-time throw rate on passes under 2.5 seconds led all passers by a wide margin, as did his 78.6% rate of accurately delivered passes.”
Cameron added, “While playing within the scheme can be conflated with a negative perception, that timing and rhythm in the passing game tends to produce excellent results with sound execution.”
When it comes to the over 2.5 seconds category, Wilson didn’t make the cut, but hey, we’ll take him being No. 2 in under 2.5 seconds.
Russell Wilson is a ‘Value Pick’
Wilson turned out to be a great value when he was with the Hawks, so hopefully the same will be true for the Giants. In a piece for the NFL, Eric Edholm calls Wilson one of the best value picks in quarterback history.
He’s ranked No. 3, with Edholm stating, “Wilson’s career has taken a downturn in recent seasons, but he was able to sting defenses in multiple ways with great early success, thanks in part to his run-around, time-buying approach that changed the way teams evaluate shorter quarterbacks.”
He adds that “earning the Seahawks’ top job by Week 1 as a rookie, Wilson (who measured 5-foot-10 5/8 at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine) would go on to start 149 straight regular-season games (165, including playoffs) for Seattle, the sixth-best QB mark in NFL history.”
