In some ways, New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson is underrated in his position. Sure, he has a lot to show for his time in the NFL. Wilson, 36, has been to two Super Bowls in his career, Super Bowl XLVIII and Super Bowl XLIX, and he won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 when he was with the Seattle Seahawks. He’s also had steady success on years when he wasn’t getting all the way to the big game.
Wilson is also still active and obviously just signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants to hopefully help turn the franchise around.
So, is Wilson one of the best NFL quarterbacks of all time? That’s up for debate, but he’s certainly better than the majority of guys who have played in the NFL.
Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports has a new feature out on Thursday, July 3, ranking the best quarterbacks in the NFL of all time. So, did Wilson make the cut?
New York Giants QB Russell Wilson Should Have Gotten a Mention
In the piece, DeArdo names Tom Brady as No. 1. That’s a no-brainer, right?
“It’s hard to find anyone who would argue Brady’s standing as the greatest quarterback of all-time,” DeArdo says. “Brady owns just about every significant NFL passing record, including the career marks for passing yards and touchdown passes.”
He has Joe Montana as the No. 2 best quarterback of all time, stating, “Considered the greatest QB of all-time pre Brady, Montana still has the unofficial title as the best QB of the 20th century,” DeArdo notes. “Montana’s ‘Joe Cool’ nickname was well earned as he led the 49ers on two of his most famous game-winning drives in NFL history.”
Now, it’s not a shock that Wilson isn’t in the top 10, but he’s not even mentioned in the piece. The story only has two active quarterbacks on the tally: Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers.
Name Drops But Not Giants’ Wilson
Some of the other active quarterbacks got a mention in the piece, but not Wilson. “Only two active quarterbacks made the cut, but it’s safe to assume that Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and Matthew Stafford, will each crack this list sometime in the near future,” DeArdo states. “Eli Manning will probably crack the list one day as well, especially if he ever receives induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
He has Mahomes as the No. 7 best quarterback to ever play in the NFL and Rodgers at No. 8.
“One of just two active players on this list, Mahomes is more than deserving of his top-10 position,” DeArdo notes. “The 29-year-old is already a two-time league and three-time Super Bowl MVP. He has an astonishing 106-27 record as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback that includes a 17-4 postseason mark. Mahomes’ five Super Bowl starts is tied with John Elway for the second-most in history.”
So, Wilson did not make the cut or even get a mention. Again, it’s not a surprise that he isn’t in the top 10, but considering that he’s been to two Super Bowls and is still making waves in the NFL, a name drop would have been nice.
