Ryan Tannehill Makes Thoughts on Tua Tagovailoa Extremely Clear

It’s safe to say that the 2025 campaign has not gone the Miami Dolphins‘ way. While they are fresh off a surprising 30-13 upset victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 10, they still have just a 3-7 record to this point. One guy who has been keeping close tabs on the team is one of their former starting quarterbacks, Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill spent six years of his career with the Dolphins before the team eventually moved on from him, paving the way for Tua Tagovailoa to eventually take over under center. In what is arguably the most important season of his career, Tagovailoa has struggled, and his future with the team beyond the 2025 campaign is in serious doubt. However, Tannehill believes that he still has potential that the Dolphins could tap into.

Ryan Tannehill Dishes on Tua Tagovailoa

Tagovailoa was selected with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, with the Dolphins hoping he could turn himself into their franchise quarterback. While Tannehill wasn’t necessarily bad for Miami, he struggled to turn the team into a true playoff contender during his time in town. Tagovailoa was brought into town to change that.

After a slow start, it seemed like Tagovailoa had found his footing in 2023. He led the league with 4,624 passing yards, while also tossing 29 touchdowns, which helped him earn the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. However, a slew of concussion issues have limited Tagovailoa’s progress to the point where he looks almost unplayable at times this season.

With the Dolphins seemingly back at square one, they could conceivably move on from Tagovailoa over the offseason, even though they signed him to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension before the 2024 campaign. And yet, while Tannehill doesn’t know Tagovailoa personally, he does believe that he is capable of being a starting quarterback in the NFL.

“I think he’s a good player,” Tannehill said in an interview with The Escapist. “I know guys that have played with him and like him. Seems like he has a good reputation with anyone I’ve come in contact with, anyone who’s been in contact with him. I want the best for him. He’s grown a lot over the course of his career. Hopefully he can keep growing and getting better.”

Should the Dolphins Move on From Tua Tagovailoa?

Tagovailoa has thrown for 1,952 yards and 17 touchdowns this season, but his 13 interceptions are tops in the league. While injuries haven’t exactly helped the Dolphins’ offense, Tagovailoa has looked uncomfortable under pressure, and he is unable to make it through his progressions in order to find open targets. That’s a recipe for disaster.

In a perfect world, Tagovailoa would show enough potential to convince Miami’s new-look front office to hold onto him over the offseason, and who knows, maybe the team’s win over Buffalo will help get the ball rolling there. But if he continues to struggle, the Dolphins may have to get another ball rolling, which would involve finding Tagovailoa’s eventual replacement at quarterback.
