Saints Legend Drew Brees Makes Stunning 2025 Prediction

There are no shortage of unknowns around the NFL heading into the 2025 season, but one thing most fans and analysts seem to agree on is that the New Orleans Saints, under first year head coach Kellen Moore, will be one of the worst teams in the league. Notice that I said ‘most fans and analysts,’ because this line of thinking doesn’t apply to everyone, including longtime Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Perhaps Drew Brees’ optimism shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. The soon-to-be Hall of Fame quarterback is arguably the defining athlete in New Orleans sports history, and even in retirement, he’s remained aligned with the franchise he spent 15 successful seasons with. That extends to his prognostication for the 2025 season… a campaign which he’s surprisingly optimistic about.

“I think they’re poised to make a statement in the NFC South this year,” Brees told Amanda Guerra of CBS Sports. “I think we’re flying under the radar right now Kellen Moore, everyone seems to love. I think the Saints are maybe in a position to surprise some people.”

The Saints are indeed in a position to surprise some people, because nobody other than Brees and diehard fans in Nola are penciling the Saints in to compete for an NFC South title. But Brees does make an interesting point about the division… there’s no dominant team in the NFC South.

“Yes, the Tampa Bay Bucs have won the division the last couple of years in a row here. Baker Mayfield is by far the most established quarterback and is playing really well. The rest of the teams have young, maybe not-quite-as-established starters. Bryce Young in Carolina finished the season really strong last year. I love his journey and the adversity he overcame last year, an up-and-coming team. Michael Penix starts that era in Atlanta.”

The problem here is that as Brees runs through the quarterbacks in the NFC South, the Saints have the murkiest quarterback situation not only in the division, but in the entire league.

Is Spencer Rattler Up For The Task?

While there are certainly questions worth asking regarding Bryce Young and Michael Penix, at least the Panthers and Falcons knew these two were their starting quarterbacks heading into the season. Until last week, we still had no idea whether it was going to be rookie 2nd rounder Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler getting the start for Week 1.

In the end it was Rattler who won the job, ending a near month-long competition that also included Jake Haener, who is now on New Orleans’ practice squad. That leaves Rattler — entering his second season — and the rookie Shough to make up the quarterback room that Saad Yousuf of The Athletic called the worst in the NFL.

“The Saints drafted Shough in the second round, so they clearly feel like they could have something there with the young quarterback out of Louisville,” Yousuf said of the Saints. “If they’re trying to protect Shough until he’s ready for the NFL, that’s understandable. But it never inspires much confidence when you’re in a ‘really, really close’ quarterback competition with Spencer Rattler, and eventually lose.”

Brees Expresses Optimism About the Rest of Saints Roster

Even though Drew Brees didn’t have much to say about Spencer Rattler, he was far more complimentary of the rest of the Saints roster than most other pundits have been willing to be.

“I think top to bottom, the Saints’ roster is really, really strong,” Brees said. “One of the best offensive lines in football. One of the most dynamic running backs in Alvin Kamara, who can do everything for you. And the two extremely explosive receivers in (Chris Olave) and (Rashid Shaheed).

“Defensively, a ton of great veteran leadership and presence in Demario Davis and Cam Jordan. Tons of young guys we drafted over the last few years at every level of the defense. So, look, I love the position that they are in.”

There’s no word on whether Gayle Benson threaten to remove Drew Brees from the New Orleans Saints Ring of Honor if he didn’t do his best to hype up his former team before the 2025 season begins, but I don’t think it’s something we can rule out.
