The San Antonio Spurs are off to the best start in franchise history. Despite winning five titles, the Spurs have never won five games in a row to start the season. Enter Victor Wembanyama, who is taking the historical franchise to new heights.
After blood clots shortened his season last year, Wembanyama is in the best form of his short career. The third-year center is averaging an insane 30.2 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks to start the season. He is also playing a more physically imposing style of play.
The Spurs look poised to compete, even in a crowded Western Conference. As the team takes the next step, there’s really only one major question that needs to be answered.

San Antonio Spurs Have Health Concerns
Any player in the NBA is susceptible to injury. Someone falls wrong or an elbow goes the wrong way, even the most durable players are not immune to injury.
With a skinny frame and the nature of playing center, however, concerns around Wembanyama’s health are higher than most. In fact, injury seems to be the only thing that could slow the Spurs down.
“The only question about Victor is his health,” declared Charles Barkley on the October 21st episode of the Dan Patrick Show. “There’s never been a question about him playing. It’s just about, can he stay healthy? These guys have these very unique bodies. He probably got the most unique body we’ve ever seen in the NBA, other than Shaquille.”
As the only center on the floor, Wembanyama is in position for players to land on his feet, twist an ankle, or take an errant blow to the head. Injuries are just a fact of the game, but for a player as important as Wembanyama, it’s hard to overlook.
Victor Wembanyama’s Track Record Looks Good
Since entering the NBA, Wembanyama has been treated extra carefully. For whatever reason, he has been dubbed “injury-prone” by fans and the media alike.
It’s entirely thanks to the fact that he presents a unique frame and a never-before-seen skillset.
“Victor’s different because you look at Manute Bol, Gheorghe Mureșan, Mark Eaton, guys who are like 7-3, 7-4, they didn’t have this type of athletic ability,” Barkkey added. “They couldn’t shoot 3s and dribble and things like that. So he’s probably the most unique player we’ve had in the NBA.”
However, Wembanyama is yet to miss real time thanks to injury. In his rookie season, he played in 71 games. Last year, it was illness, not on-court injury, that ended his season prematurely.
When he played in France, before being drafted, he dealt with some minor lower-body injuries. However, he is committed to recovery, flexibility, and injury prevention like no one in the NBA has ever seen before.
While an injury to Wemby would be devastating to the Spurs, fans shouldn’t be expecting the ax to fall anytime soon. Most of the “concerns” are totally unfounded.
