San Diego Padres Linked to 31-HR All-Star Slugger as Trade Fit

The San Diego Padres have had a shaky start to the 2026 season. At the time of this writing, the Padres have a 2-4 record and are at the bottom of the National League West standings. However, they picked up a 7-1 win over the San Francisco Giants in their last game, so they will be looking to build off that to get things back on track.

The Padres are hoping to once again be among the top teams in the league this season, and it is understandable when noting that they have plenty of talent on their roster. However, when looking at their current group, it is fair to argue that they could use another high-impact player to help them take that next step.

One of the Padres’ biggest needs is another star power hitter in their lineup. Because of this, the Padres are being linked to a young All-Star hitter from the Washington Nationals.

San Diego Padres Named Potential Trade Destination for Washington Nationals Star James Wood

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Zachary D. Rymer looked at some of the best trade candidates early on in the 2026 season. Nationals slugger James Wood made the cut, as he was given the No. 3 spot.

“The 6’6”, 234-pound Wood is one of the most purely powerful sluggers in MLB, as seen in how his exit velocity and hard-hit rate both landed in the 98th percentile last season. There’s also patience to go with the power. Wood is young enough for teams to believe his whiffing problem might be mitigated with the right program,” Rymer wrote.

If the Nationals ended up making Wood available for trade this season, the Padres would certainly be smart to target him. He would have the potential to be an amazing fit on their roster and would give them another major power hitter to work with in the middle of their lineup. This would not be a bad thing at all for a Padres club that is in need of more offense.

Wood is coming off a strong 2025 season with the Nationals, too. In 157 games with the Nationals this past campaign, the 23-year-old slugger had 31 home runs, 38 doubles, 94 RBIs, and a .256 batting average. With numbers like these, he understandably made his first All-Star Game.

Ultimately, if the Padres picked up Wood, he would immediately become one of their most impactful power hitters and could be a great fit on their roster.

Nationals’ Wood Should Generate Interest From Several Teams

With Wood still being so young and already showing such promise in the majors, there is no question that the Padres should not be the only team that targets him this season if he is made available. He is exactly the kind of power hitter that contenders should be lining up for. However, he could also be a fit for teams on the rise due to his young age.

Yet, with the Padres in need of another star in their lineup, they should not be afraid to make a massive push for Wood this season. It will be intriguing to see if they can land him from here.
