San Francisco 49ers Acquire Two-Time Super Bowl Champion, Help Wide Receiver Room

On August 20, 2025, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the San Francisco 49ers are acquiring wide receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs. In exchange, the 49ers are swapping their 6th round draft pick for the Chiefs’ 7th rounder in 2027.

Moore, 24, was Kansas City’s second round pick in 2022 after a superb 2021 season at Western Michigan.

He has struggled to produce at the NFL level, with only 494 yards and 1 touchdown in 3 seasons. He also was limited by a core muscle injury in 2024.

But he has had some flashes of brilliance, particularly in helping Kansas City’s Super Bowl run in 2022. During that season’s AFC Championship Game, Moore’s 29-yard punt return set up Harrison Butker’s game-winning field goal.

Then, Moore had a key fourth-quarter touchdown in the Chiefs’ 38-35 Super Bowl LVII victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. That was Moore’s first career TD.

How Might the 49ers Utilize Moore?

The 49ers just need anybody who is healthy and serviceable to take the field for them in Week 1 at this point. Their wide receiver room has been completely decimated by injuries. So the 49ers are going to use Moore purely because they have to.

And Moore is not necessarily a superstar receiver at this point in his career. Many insiders believe that the Chiefs were going to cut Moore at the end of training camp anyway.

But, Moore could still factor into the offense even when some of the injured wide receivers return. Plus, he’s still only 24 years old, so he has plenty of his physical prime left to become a good player.

Many insiders and expert analysts believe Moore could be used as a Deebo Samuel-lite sort of player. Moore is a shorter, more speedy receiver, so he seems like a likely candidate for Kyle Shanahan to use as a runner or on short, lateral pass plays.

He also could factor into the return game, though San Francisco will likely want to see him improve on his fumbling issues that plagued him on special teams in Kansas City.

Does Moore Make Junior Bergen Expendable?

Junior Bergen is the 49ers’ seventh round selection out of the University of Montana. He was not projected to contribute extensively to the 49ers offense this season, but he has had an inside track to making the 2025 roster because of his prowess as a punt and kick returner.

Bergen impressed with a punt return in his first preseason game against the Denver Broncos

But, with Moore in town, Bergen may be facing his stiffest competition yet for returning punts and kicks. If Moore impresses in practice, the 49ers may have much less reason to keep Bergen around.

Of course, that all depends on if the 49ers even want to use Moore as a returner. It’s possible they just have him focus on offense and let Bergen handle special teams return duties.

But it’s still something for fans of Bergen to monitor, as well as people concerned with the 49ers special teams.

Are the 49ers Done Acquiring Wide Receivers?

The Skyy Moore trade angered some 49ers fans. Those fans wanted to see the 49ers make a bigger splash to help their wide receiver room, like acquiring Terry McLaurin from the Washington Commanders

This has been a trend all season for the 49ers. Because of cap concerns, they have signed unproven players and cut them and signed some more instead of acquiring a proven piece to help their wide receiver woes.

But just because the 49ers acquired Moore doesn’t mean they won’t make more trades. So until the 53-man roster is set, 49ers fans should continue to be on the lookout for trade news.

What do you think of the Skyy Moore deal, 49ers fans?
