On Wednesday July 2, 2025, over 70,000 fans packed Levi’s Stadium — but it wasn’t for a San Francisco 49ers game.
Many 49ers players, including LB Fred Warner, DE Yetur Gross-Matos, S Malik Mustapha, DL Alfred Collins and DT CJ West were at Levi’s. But instead of taking the field, they packed the seats along with the 70k other fans.
That’s because Levi’s stadium was hosting the Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal soccer game between Mexico and Honduras.
The 49ers teammates seem like they had a great time, with many of them supporting Team Mexico. Some of them wore Team Mexico gear while others posted videos cheering on Team Mexico.
Warner even stood on the sideline, wearing a custom “Warner 54” Mexico kit, and fired up the crowd of predominantly team Mexico supporters.
Game Means A Lot to Warner Especially
Warner is such a passionate supporter of team Mexico because of his Mexican-American heritage.
The superstar 49ers linebacker is half Mexican-American on his mother’s side. His mom, Laura, is close to Warner’s heart. She raised Warner and his siblings after his parents split up when he was a toddler.
Warner has shown his support for Mexico soccer before. When the 49ers played a game in Mexico versus the Arizona Cardinals on November 21, 2022, Warner wore the custom jersey as a pregame fit, along with a team Mexico scarf.
“This is a pretty great moment, being able to play in Mexico, given my Mexican heritage,” Warner said in a postgame interview (h/t 49ers.com). “That was special, to walk into [Estadio Azteca] wearing the jersey repping Mexico, and coming out of there with a win most importantly.”
The 49ers beat the Cardinals 38-10 in the Mexico game. Warner also shared in his postgame interview that his former 49ers teammate, OT Alfredo Gutierrez who is from Mexico, got him the jersey.
What Happened In the Soccer Game?
Perhaps the 49ers energy helped spur on Mexico, because they were able to defeat Honduras 1-0 in the Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal on Wednesday July 2, 2025.
Raul Jimenez scored the lone goal of the contest in the 50th minute off an assist from 16-year old Gilberto Mora. The Mexican defense was excellent, with goalkeeper Luis Malagon only facing 6 shot attempts and needing to make 1 save during the contest.
Team Mexico now advances to the Concacaf Gold Cup Final against the United States of America. That game will take place at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
This is a matchup with a lot of history. The U.S. and Mexico have played five times in the Concacaf Gold Cup final, and Mexico has a 5-2 record against the U.S. in those games.
Mexico has won 9 Gold Cups in total while the U.S. has won 7.
The 49ers were likely enticed to come to the semifinal game given that it was at their home stadium in Santa Clara. But are any of them big enough soccer fans to make the trip to Houston, and if so, who will they root for?
49ers fans will have to wait until the weekend to find out.
