San Francisco 49ers Superstar Brandon Aiyuk’s Heated Talk With Legends Turns Heads

After the San Francisco 49ers’ second day of minicamp on Wednesday June 11, 2025, 49ers insider Grant Cohn’s biggest storyline wasn’t something that happened on the field, but rather something that took place on the sideline. 

“It was Brandon Aiyuk listening as Terell Owens lectured him for a cool 15 minutes,” Cohn said in a video he posted on X. 

While Cohn doesn’t know exactly what the two were talking about, it seemed like a serious and important conversation, and Aiyuk and Owens were not the only big names involved. 

“In this group was also Patrick Willis and Frank Gore,” Cohn said. “It was Terell Owens holding court talking directly to Brandon Aiyuk while Gore and Willis watched. 

Aiyuk has been a much-maligned star by the 49ers fanbase in recent years for his off the field drama and struggles after signing his most recent contract.

Aiyuk’s History of Beef With San Francisco

During last offseason, on July 16, 2024, Aiyuk requested a trade from the 49ers due to lack of progression with his contract extension negotiations. 

The 49ers and Aiyuk eventually made peace, with San Francisco holding off from trading him and instead signing him to a 4-year, $120 million contract extension on August 30, 2024. 

But in his first six and a half weeks of the NFL season, Aiyuk struggled, racking up only 374 receiving yards and no touchdowns. Then, in a very cruel twist of fate, Aiyuk tore his ACL during the 49ers 28-18 Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on October 20, 2024. 

Aiyuk has been rehabbing his injuries this offseason, but in recent weeks, speculation of strife between him and the 49ers picked up again. Last week on June 4, Cohn reported that Aiyuk had unfollowed the 49ers on Instagram again, like he’d done during his contract issues. Aiyuk also made headlines for a series of cryptic Instagram posts during the week.

Could Owens Be Helping Mend Aiyuk’s Relationship with the 49ers? 

Cohn finished out his report on X with a bold statement about Aiyuk’s relationship with Owens related to their recent conversation. 

“If things work out with [Aiyuk] and the 49ers, [Owens] is going to be the one who works them out,” Cohn said. “You gotta love people who gain wisdom in their old age, gotta love TO.” 

Owens had his share of strife with the 49ers during his playing days. Back in 2023, Owens shared that he experienced systemic racism under former 49ers head coach Steve Marriucci’s regime during Owens’ tenure with the 49ers as a player from 1997-2002. 

The 49ers ended up trading Owens to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004, despite the fact that Owens had just rattled off four straight Pro Bowl seasons in San Francisco and was still at the height of his game.

Cohn is drawing a parallel between how things went down with the 49ers and Owens and how things are going down with the 49ers and Aiyuk — speculating that Owens may be attempting to help Aiyuk through his own situation. 

“It seems like TO is the voice of reason,” Cohn stated. 

49ers fans hope that there is no more drama ahead between Aiyuk and the 49ers, and that one day, he will be standing on the sideline amongst other 49ers legends helping future young stars at minicamp like Owens is doing now.
