San Francisco Giants Set For Key Roster Move Amid Injury Return

On Tuesday August 12, 2025, San Francisco Giants insider Shayna Rubin reported pitcher Landen Roupp is returning to the rotation to start in San Francisco’s game Friday August 15, 2025 versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

Roupp has been on the injured list since July 25, 2025 with a minor right elbow issue.

The Giants are no doubt relieved to have their young star and No. 3 starter back on the pitching staff. But it raises an important question. When Roupp rejoins the active roster, who will be sent back down to AAA Sacramento?

What the Giants choose could have ramifications for this season and beyond.

A Big Change For Kai-Wei Teng?

When Kai-Wei Teng was recalled to the Giants, insiders believed he was just going to make a couple spot starts in Landen Roupp’s place while Roupp recovered from his injury.

Then, as soon as Roupp came back, Teng would relinquish his spot in the rotation and be sent back to AAA Sacramento.

But on Tuesday August 12, 2025, the Giants recalled Tyler Fitzgerald from the minor leagues and sent No. 5 starter Carson Whisenhunt back to AAA Sacramento.

This leaves the roster in a weird place. If the Giants wanted to bring back Roupp and send down Whisenhunt, they could have done just that straight up. It’s possible that Fitzgerald is just the middleman, and he will be the one sent down when Roupp officially returns Friday. But it seems kind of silly for the Giants to call him up for only two games and one start in right field.

They could also still send Teng down. But that would leave them with a four man rotation. Throwing a bullpen game every fifth day would be a strategic and developmental disaster.

Teng is seeking to continue to prove he belongs in the rotation with another start on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

In all likelihood, the Giants will send relief pitcher Tristan Beck back down to AAA. He is the player they promoted when Roupp suffered his injury in the first place.

If not Beck, rookie Carson Seymour is a candidate to be sent down. If not now, Seymour may be ticketed for AAA when relief pitcher Erik Miller returns from his rehab assignment. Miller is set for one or two more rehab appearances before he is brought back to San Francisco.

Matt Chapman Injured?

The Giants also got an injury update on Matt Chapman on Wednesday August 13, 2025. Chapman is apparently experiencing soreness in the same hand that he injured in the first half, and is taking the day off against the San Diego Padres.

It doesn’t seem to be something that will cause Chapman to miss significant time or hit the injured list. But, it’s still something for Giants fans to monitor. If Chapman is in the lineup behind Roupp on Friday, then there is truly nothing to worry about.

If he does miss any more time, Casey Schmitt will fill in at third base with Christian Koss and potentially Fitzgerald taking the reps at second base.

Giants fans, are you excited for Landen Roupp to return from the injured list? Who do you think should be sent down to AAA when he returns?
