Scottie Scheffler shared a rare glimpse deep into his mindset ahead of The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in 2025, opening up about his feelings on playing golf and his family.
Talking to reporters ahead of the tournament, Scheffler mentioned how his wife, Meredith Scudder Scheffler, and his son, Bennett, give him more fulfillment in his life than his success in golf.
“I love playing golf. I love being able to compete. I love living out my dreams. I love being a father. I love being able to take care of my son. I love being able to provide for my family out here playing golf,” Scheffler said. “Every day when I wake up early to go put in the work, my wife thanks me for going out and working so hard. When I get home, I try and thank her every day for taking care of our son. That’s why I talk about family being my priority because it really is.”
Scottie Scheffler Told Reporters, ‘I’d Much Rather Be a Great Father Than a Great Golfer’
Scheffler added, “I’m blessed to be able to come out here and play golf, but if my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or my son, that’s going to be the last day that I play out here for a living.”
He said, “This is not the be all, end all. This is not the most important thing in my life. That’s why I wrestle with, why is this so important to me? Because I’d much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer. At the end of the day, that’s what’s more important to me.”
Scheffler told reporters, “When I sit back at the end of the year and try to reflect on things, like having that sense of accomplishment from winning the Masters tournament, from winning the PGA Championship, I have a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for it, but it’s just hard to explain how it doesn’t — it just doesn’t satisfy is how I would describe it. It’s an unsatisfying venture.”
He added, “I guess what I’m trying to say is this is not the place to look for your satisfaction. This is something where you can have a great appreciation for and a great — like a great amount of thankfulness for being able to do this. Like I said, it’s literally one of the most fun things I can do in my entire life. I love being able to come out here and compete, but at the end of the day, it’s not what satisfies me, if that makes sense.”
Scheffler & His Wife, Meredith, Have Been Together Since High School

Scheffler and his wife, Meredith Scheffler, have been dating since high school. They met while they were both attending Highland Park High School in Texas, and had a long-distance relationship through college.
She told Golf Digest, “I was new to the high school and I didn’t know anyone in the class so I went and sat right next to Scottie because I remembered him. I was feeling really bold. At the beginning of high school I always thought he had a super humble ambiance about him, that he was just a really down-to-earth guy that doesn’t take himself too seriously. Even when he had amazing accomplishments, that wasn’t the most important thing about him.”
The Schefflers have been married since 2020.
Scheffler Called His Wife His ‘Biggest Supporter’ & His ‘Best Friend’

Scheffler became emotional while talking about Meredith after winning the Memorial Championship in June 2025. He told CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis, “I mean, my wife is my biggest supporter, she’s my best friend.”
He added, “You know, this is our life, out here on the road. It’s been a lot of fun. … definitely couldn’t do it without her.”
At the Genesis Scottish Open, Scheffler talked about having his wife and son by his side at the tournement.
“This is a fun week for us. We get to stay very close to the course. So it’s nice for them to be able to walk out and hang out with me for a couple holes. That’s something we very rarely get to do,” he told reporters. “Yesterday there were no fans, so it was nice to relax and have Meredith come and hang for a couple holes. At tournament weeks, you don’t get a bunch of time at home so it’s nice for them to come out and hang out a little bit.”
Scheffler Said About Life Since His Son Bennett Was Born, ‘There’s Not Much Downtime When I Get Home’
Andrew Redington/Getty Scottie Scheffler walks with his wife, Meredith Scheffler, and son, Bennett Scheffler during the Par Three Contest prior to the 2025 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 09, 2025.
Scheffler was asked at his press conference ahead of the British Open if he likes to read, and he talked about how life has changed since his son Bennett was born in 2024.
“I have a devotional book that I read on my iPad. I have another book that I’m reading right now, which is definitely not a golf book. It’s another spiritual book. Basically that. My Bible is pretty much it. I’m not really a huge reader,” Scheffler said. “I have read a couple books about golf course design — sorry, I shouldn’t say read. Skimmed would probably be a better description of that. Just to learn, just out of curiosity. I did that a little bit before Bennett when I had a little bit more downtime.”
Scheffler added, “Now there’s not much downtime when I get home. It’s kind of sprinting around chasing the little man, so I don’t get too much time to read. Basically just Bible and a couple other books. Nothing about golf.”
