Seahawks Eyed as a Top Team for Rival $120 Million WR Amid Expected ‘Stunning Split’

The Seattle Seahawks have emerged as one of the top teams in the NFL, but it is never too early to build for the future. With hours left in the NFL trade deadline, the Seahawks acquired speedster Rashid Shaheed in a deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Now, the Seahawks are being tabbed as a potential landing spot for San Francisco 49ers star receiver Brandon Aiyuk this offseason. The playmaker faces an uncertain future in the Bay Area, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox labeled the Seahawks as one of the top landing spots if the wideout is released this offseason.

“While Miami might be a near-perfect destination for Aiyuk, the Seattle Seahawks could provide a dream pairing,” Knox wrote in a November 21, 2025, story titled, “Dream NFL Landing Spots for Brandon Aiyuk if 49ers Release Star WR.” “Seattle seems to have found (its) quarterback in Sam Darnold and it playing like a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

“The Seahawks also happen to employ offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who served in the same position with the 49ers during Aiyuk’s breakout 2023 campaign. Guess what? Darnold was part of that 2023 squad too, even seeing a start as Brock Purdy’s understudy,” Knox added.

“… For Seattle, signing Aiyuk would create one of the best young receiving corps in the league. For Aiyuk, the pairing would provide plenty of familiarity and a chance to keep chasing postseason success.”

Let’s explore how Aiyuk could fit with the Seahawks.

The 49ers Are Expected to Cut Ties With WR Brandon Aiyuk Leaving the Door Open for Seahawks to Pounce

Aiyuk is on a four-year, $120 million contract that is slated to go through the 2028 season. Seattle likely would not have much of a stomach to take on this massive deal which rises each year, ending with a sizable $43 million cap hit in 2028.

This is partly why there is chatter that the Niners could release Aiyuk this offseason. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Michael Silver reported that the 49ers are preparing for a “stunning split” as the franchise is at odds with how the playmaker has handled things since sustaining a season-ending knee injury.

“It now appears that Aiyuk and the 49ers are headed for a stunning divorce,” Russini and Silver wrote in a November 21, story titled, “49ers preparing for stunning split with star receiver Brandon Aiyuk.” “Aiyuk, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in October 2024, was placed on the physically unable to perform list in July and has yet to be activated.

“It’s now likely that the 27-year-old has played his last game with the franchise, according to numerous sources briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive situation. Some in the organization are holding out hope that the relationship can be salvaged enough for him to return this season. However, multiple sources believe that a reconciliation is unlikely.”

The Seahawks May Pass on Brandon Aiyuk Given the Tension With 49ers

Even if the price is right, the Seahawks may be leery of messing with a good thing. Seattle already has one of the best NFL wideouts in Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Given the 49ers’ reason for likely parting ways with Aiyuk, the Seahawks may not be eager to sign the veteran playmaker. San Francisco has grown “increasingly frustrated” with Aiyuk for missing meetings and becoming a distraction when he does attend practices, per The Athletic.

“Aiyuk, sources say, has failed to attend meetings and declined to participate in other team activities in recent months, and the 49ers have grown increasingly frustrated with the receiver’s lack of communication,” Russini and Silver noted.

“The 49ers, sources say, responded by voiding the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract for 2026, asserting that the absences amounted to a failure to fulfill his contractual obligations.”
