Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald Sends Strong Message on Demarcus Lawrence’s Return

The Seattle Seahawks were thought to be a team heading into a transition period, with the franchise trading veteran quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and Pete Carroll‘s successor, Mike Macdonald, still trying to determine how to lead the team moving forward.

Although there have been a lot of changes in Seattle, Macdonald seems to have this team firing on all cylinders, even with a new starting quarterback under center, Sam Darnold. The Seahawks are sporting a record of 3-2 heading into Week 6’s matchup on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The team may be coming off a three-point loss to Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the Seahawks have proven over the course of the first five games of the 2025 NFL season that they are a force to be reckoned with in the NFC.

Seattle didn’t have star defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence on the field in Week 5’s loss to the Buccaneers due to a thigh injury, but that will change in Week 6 against the Jaguars.

Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald Opens Up About DeMarcus Lawrence

After missing last week’s loss to the Buccaneers, Lawrence will get back on the gridiron this Sunday in Jacksonville at EverBank Stadium. Macdonald was asked about having his star defensive end back on the field against a resurgent Jaguars squad that has lost only one game so far this season.

Macdonald opened up about Lawrence’s impact on the team this week during a Seahawks press conference.

“He’s a really important part of our team,” Macdonald said. “He’s set a tone since he walked in the door. It’s on record on what we think about him, how he handles his business and what we think of him as a person. So it’s great to have him back on the field.

“Thinking about practice today. He’s made several plays today that we need to be able to make in order to give ourselves a chance.”

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact Lawrence will have in Week 6 against the Jaguars and whether he can help the team improve to 4-2 on the season.

Sam Darnold’s Ideal Opportunity With Seahawks

After an impressive season with the Minnesota Vikings during the 2024 campaign, Darnold chose to bet on himself once again by signing with the Seahawks to be Smith’s successor in Seattle.

Although it was uncertain whether Darnold could continue to be successful as a starter with the Seahawks, the USC product has played well over the course of the first five games of the 2025 NFL season. The veteran quarterback has been put in an interesting situation in Seattle, with Macdonald at the helm and so many changes on the roster.

However, he seems to be trending in the right direction, throwing for 1,249 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He doesn’t seem to have missed a beat from his success with the Vikings, which is a great sign for Seattle moving forward in the post-Pete Carroll era.
