Seahawks Not Resting on their Laurels Despite Hot Start

The Seattle Seahawks have every reason to be satisfied with where the team is during their bye week. They’re 5-2, head into the bye with a 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football, life is good, right? Well, to the players and coaches in the Seahawks organization, they feel as though there is still meat they’ve left on the bone.

The Seahawks’ offense is ranked sixth in the NFL in total points per game at 27.6. A significant reason is future All-Pro wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who leads the NFL in receiving yards.

On defense, the Seahawks rank seventh in total points per game, allowing 19.4 points per game. Having both a top-ten offense and defense suggests the team is playing complementary football, which it is, but they still feel the team can ascend to a higher level after the bye week.

Cleaning Up the Little Things

The Seahawks feel fortunate to have a 5-2 record at this point in the season, but they are not getting complacent with just being good. The team feels they have the pieces to go far this season, but they need to be detailed with how they go about their business.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald echoed these sentiments when talking about celebrating wins while constantly looking to improve. John Boyle of Seahawks.com wrote about Macdonald’s comments in his October 26 article.

It’s kind of cool,Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. We’re finding ways to win games, which, like I said, it’s really difficult to win. You’ve got to celebrate those things. Look, we could be 7-0 and have won every game by 30 points, and trust we’re going to find stuff we’re going to want to improve on. When we watch the tape, we’ll go back and regroup, self scout, try to get those answers for next week. It will be very clear on where we need to grow. The guys see it. They see it. They feel it. We got a great group of guys. I’ll tell you what, they’re going to be really determined coming out of the bye.”

The Seahawks are looking forward to the rest of the season, but the bye came at an opportune time for the team.

Bye Came at the Perfect Time

Not every team gets a bye week at the mid-point of the season, but this year, the Seahawks were fortunate enough to be one of the teams for whom this was a reality.

Seahawks star defensive tackle Leonard Williams discussed after the Seahawks’ win against the Texans that the bye week came at the perfect time for the team. Seahawks.com provided the transcript of Williams’ answer.

“I think we got our bye at the perfect time. It’s almost midseason right now. I think we’re going into it feeling good about what we’ve accomplished so far,” Williams said. There are obviously some areas that we have to clean up, but I think it’s a great time to recover, figure out what we’ve got to clean up and get back on the road.”

Two crucial pieces the Seahawks will get back after their bye are safety Julian Love and Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon. The Seahawks are getting healthier and hoping the best is yet to come in their season.
