Seahawks Urged to Sign 129-Sack All-Pro Free Agent

Like most teams, the Seattle Seahawks could still use help rushing the passer, even though training camp is almost here.

But former NFL quarterback and Seattle-area radio host/high-school football coach Brock Huard thinks the answer to the Seahawks’ pass-rushing prayers is still on the market in free agent Von Miller.

The veteran pass rusher spent the past three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, posting 14 sacks in 36 games. Miller had six sacks and seven tackles for loss in 13 regular-season games for Buffalo yet did not get a contract from Buffalo and is still available in free agency.

Why Should The Seahawks Sign Von Miller?

The Seahawks are overhauling their defensive line after finishing tied for eighth in the NFL in sacks last season (45). They’ve already signed DeMarcus Lawrence and reportedly have been tied to Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt, whose name has come up in trade rumors this week.

But Miller, the MVP of Super Bowl 50 and NFL’s sacks leader among active players (129.5), could be had for a low-cost, low-risk deal where Seattle wouldn’t have to part with draft capital or give a huge contract extension to a soon-to-be 31-year-old.

Plus, Miller could fill a clear hole as a pass-rushing specialist, according to Huard, who was discussing if the Seahawks might have any interest in the top-17 remaining free agents, according to ESPN. That list was published Wednesday, with Miller listed as the No. 16 player.

“You’re not gonna count on him in any way to be a three-down player,” Huard said on the “Brock and Salk” show Wednesday. “But as a specialist – depending on their health through training camp and what they all look like – he would be kind of the guy out of those 17. He’d be the one I think they’ve done their homework on, they’ve kicked their tires on a little bit.”

Huard said Miller may be holding out for an ideal circumstance and as a veteran — Miller was picked second overall in the 2011 NFL Draft — may be seeking a contract midway into training camp.

“Those veterans are in the same boat too,” Huard said. “They’re looking at all the different situations. I’m sure many of those guys have been offered deals, but they’ve looked at it and said, no, now is not the best time for me.

“Let me see how training camp unfolds in different places, where the best fit is for me, for my skill set, and where it is for the team on the other side.”

What Would Von Miller Bring To Seattle?

Miller just turned 36, so he is long on the tooth. But he has always been a savvy pass rusher, proven by the fact he is an eight-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro who has still proven useful even though he has not been the same player since sustaining an ankle injury that cost him the whole season in 2020.

But Miller is a two-time Super Bowl champion, winning his second ring with the NFC West-rival Los Angeles Rams in 2021-22.

He could bring veteran savvy and playoff experience since he has participated in playoff games in three of the past four seasons.
