Veteran guard Seth Curry was a part of the Golden State Warriors‘ training camp squad, but had to be cut from the roster due to the franchise’s lack of financial flexibility in the CBA’s new salary-cap environment.
Since the Warriors were hard-capped and just below the second apron, they were not allowed to sign Curry to an additional veteran minimum contract. As such, they waived him with a handshake agreement to re-sign him in November, which they did.
Now that Seth Curry is back on the Warriors, he shared his true feelings on being cut from the roster and watching more than a month’s action from the sidelines.
“I was fine,” Curry said of getting cut after playing in the preseason, via Sam Gordon of the San Francisco Chronicle. “It was just weird not being in a locker room every day, going to shoot-around and going to games for the first time in 12, 13 years.”
Seth Curry Warriors Debut
Curry was a full participant in Monday’s practice session at the Chase Center and will make his season debut during Tuesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Interestingly, Stephen Curry’s younger brother traveled with the team even when he was not an active roster member, according to head coach Steve Kerr, accompanying them on their six-game, nine-day road trip last month. Curry reportedly returned home in Charlotte to train when the Warriors were on shorter trips.
Curry explained why he chose to travel with the Warriors when not part of the team.
“The main thing was, I wanted to come back healthy and not have to deal with anything nagging when I did re-sign,” he said. “I got a handle on the league and how the league’s been playing over the last month, or whatever. My mental is right. Just trying to keep my game sharp and stay in as best shape as possible.”
Steve Kerr Excited
The journeyman acknowledged that his stop with the Warriors may be one of his last opportunities to be a pro in the NBA, having played for eight teams across 11 seasons.
“Everybody around the league knows what I bring to the table as far as my game,” Curry said. “Being able to spread the floor, make shots, create offense. I feel like I can with my movement and (I’m) a little underrated on the ball as far as playing ball-screen, and dribble-handoff games and creating that attention from the defense.
“(The Warriors) know what I bring and the whole league knows what I bring. Just trying to provide that as soon as possible.”
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr is excited to have another sharpshooter on the roster. Seth Curry, who ranks eighth all-time in three-point shooting percentage (43.3), shot a career-high 45.6% for the Charlotte Hornets last year.
“It’s great having Seth officially,” Kerr said.
“Another great shooter, a guy who’s really solid with the ball. Total pro. Ready on a moment’s notice. So, it’s exciting. Obviously, we’ve been anticipating this.”
Unfortunately, Warriors fans will have to wait a little longer for the long-awaited Curry Brothers reunion, with Stephen Curry (quad contusion) sidelined indefinitely. The four-time champion is scheduled to undergo a reevaluation on Thursday.
