Shedeur Sanders Gets Concerning Browns Update After Dillon Gabriel News

There have been conflicting reports on what the Cleveland Browns might do with Shedeur Sanders.

However, after working with the backups during practice this past week, it remains likely that the Browns won’t start him this season.

While Sanders could eventually get his opportunity, it seems more likely that a different quarterback will be the Week 1 starter for Cleveland.

And according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, that could be Dillon Gabriel. She spoke about how significant it was that he’s getting first-team reps right now, which Sanders isn’t.

“I think it’s very significant right now that they’re throwing first-teamers at Dillon,” Cabot said. “Dillon is playing with the first-team offense against the first-team defense. I mean, those are choice quality reps that he’s getting.”

Stefanski Says Browns Aren’t Close to a Decision

Gabriel has impressed during his short time with the Cleveland Browns and was very good during his time at Oregon. However, he’s undersized, and his tools don’t jump off the page.

While he was selected higher than Sanders, going in the third round compared to the fifth round, it’s tough to say that Sanders isn’t the better NFL prospect.

When speaking to reporters about the situation, however, head coach Kevin Stefanski said that the media shouldn’t look too much into the decisions at camp.

He later added that they’re far away from making any sort of plans, and they’re just trying to see how things unfold.

“Like I’ve told you guys, let’s not look too much into who’s out there when. We’re in installation phase, we’re in teaching phase, so not much to look into,” Stefanski said, per SI.

“We’re so far away from that type of thought process. Honestly, we’re in our installation phase. It’s the offseason, it’s OTA, so we’re going to keep the focus there. Once you get into training camp, of course, you’re getting ready to play games and ultimately getting ready for playing the season, but right now that’s not our focus,” Stefanski continued.

Gabriel’s Development Progress

Gabriel has plenty to learn from the Cleveland Browns. With veterans like Joe Flacco in the building, however, he should be able to learn rather quickly.

He was the 2024 Big Ten offensive player of the year after impressing at Oregon, throwing for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He doesn’t have great arm strength, but he knows how to make the right plays, and he’s a bit older than the typical rookie, having played in college for six years.

“I’d say two words. Continuous improvement. In this profession, I think there’s a bunch of progression and regression. Just your ability to manage that as fast as possible. I think that allows a bunch of improvement at a faster pace. I have just been approaching it like that and am eager to learn each and every day and approach this like I’m a student,” Gabriel said.

If the Browns allow Gabriel and Sanders to compete for the QB1 position, it might not be surprising to see Sanders win the job.

However, for now, Gabriel appears to be the one who is getting the chance.
