Shedeur Sanders Seemingly Given Worst-Case Scenario News on Browns Future

Shedeur Sanders is still the Cleveland Browns quarterback, but that may soon come to an end.

Sanders is set for his third-straight start in Week 14 against the Tennessee Titans as the rookie is looking to prove he’s the team’s long-term answer at quarterback.

However, Browns insider Ken Carman of 92.3 The Fan believes Cleveland is ‘desperate’ to take a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“They’re more desperate than any team out there for quarterbacks,” Carman said on Wednesday. “If you don’t think they’re taking a quarterback next year as of right now, you’re lying to yourself, guys. You are just lying to yourselves. They are going to do whatever is necessary. If Shedeur Sanders doesn’t turn it up and look like he’s the franchise quarterback, they are going to do whatever is necessary (to get a quarterback).”

Carman not only thinks the Browns will take a franchise quarterback in the Draft, but they will also do whatever it takes. This includes trading multiple picks to land the guy they want.

“You guys know this owner. You know this football team. It won’t just be the Jacksonville pick. It will be another pick in this draft. And I wouldn’t put it past them to give up the first-round pick in 2027 to make sure. If they love a guy that much, this team will do whatever is necessary,” Carman added.

The top quarterbacks available in the 2026 NFL Draft feature Fernando Mendoza, Dante Moore, and Ty Simpson.

Browns Predicted to Trade Up to First Overall

With Cleveland having a clear need at quarterback, the Browns are expected to be aggressive in the draft to find their guy.

The Athletic’s NFL Draft analyst, Dane Brugler, released his latest mock on Wednesday. The analyst had the Browns trading up to the first overall to pick Fernando Mendoza.

“Owning two first-rounders in April and having received marginal play under center this season, the Browns have the ammo and motivation to be aggressive quarterback hunters this offseason,” Brugler wrote. … “In this scenario, the Browns package both of their 2026 first-rounders (and probably a 2027 Day 2 selection) to Tennessee for rights to the No. 1 pick.

“Mendoza, whom NFL scouts compare to Goff or Kirk Cousins, won’t wow with his arm velocity or speed, but his football intelligence (both pre- and post-snap) separates him. He has an outstanding feel for playing on time and layering throws to attack vulnerable spots in the defense, with just enough mobility to avoid sacks at an encouraging rate. The Browns will like Mendoza for a lot of the same reasons they liked Gabriel — except Mendoza has better physical attributes and a higher upside.”

It’s clear that the Browns don’t view Sanders or Gabriel as their long-term guy. That’s why Cleveland is expected to be aggressive in taking a quarterback in April.

Sanders Knows he Has to be Better

Sanders will be starting his third-straight game on Sunday against the Titans.

The rookie quarterback is coming off a disappointing performance against the San Francisco 49ers. After the game, Sanders was frustrated with his performance as he felt like he had to be much better.

“I just got to be better overall. I got to be able to rally everybody together when adversity is hidden,” Sanders said postgame on Sunday. “So even when I’m off, I got great teammates around me that’s able to pick me up and keep going. But I think overall, I just got to have more of a role like that and better at that.”

Sanders has thrown for 405 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions this season.
