Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is one of the most notable athletes in the world, but his wife Mamiko Tanaka prefers to keep a low profile. Tanaka is no stranger to Dodgers games amid the team’s World Series run, but she does not have a sizable social media presence.
Ohtani surprisingly announced the couple was married via a 2024 Instagram post. The Dodgers star declined to provide many details about the particulars of their relationship.
Tanaka accompanied Ohtani to Atlanta during the 2025 MLB All-Star Game festivities. Ohtani’s posts from the weekend did not include Tanaka’s face as the couple prioritizes their privacy.
“She is a Japanese woman,” Ohtani said during a February 29, 2024, media session after announcing the couple’s marriage, per Associated Press. “I don’t really feel comfortable talking about when I got married exactly, but she’s a normal Japanese woman.”

Ohtani is not the only athlete in the family. Tanaka is a former pro basketball player who suited up for the Japanese team Fujitsu Red Wave in the Women’s Basketball League. Ohtani’s wife played forward for four seasons in the WBL, per ESPN’s Brianna Williams.
“She signed with the Red Wave in 2019, and the team finished the regular season with a 13-3 record,” Williams wrote in a March 14, 2024, article titled, “Shohei Ohtani shares first photo with wife, Mamiko Tanaka.” “The Red Wave’s most successful season during Tanaka’s tenure came in 2021.
