Sixers’ VJ Edgecombe Earns High Praise After Summer League Debut

VJ Edgecombe has only played in one Summer League game so far, but the Philadelphia 76ers rookie is already earning rave reviews. During a recent appearance on “The Hoop Collective” podcast, ESPN’s Tim McMahon heaped praise on the Sixers guard.

“Edgecombe, you watch him and he is just a wow athlete,” McMahon said. “The turbo button, the leaping ability. I mean, he got up 27 shots, and there weren’t a lot where you said, ‘Boy, he forced that one.’ Ten rebounds. He is a high-level athlete. I mean, he might be a top 10 athlete when he steps on the board.”

McMahon continued by comparing Edgecombe’s Summer League debut to some of the top talents in the NBA.

“VJ Edgecombe is the fourth top 5 pick to have 25 25-point, 10-rebound game in Summer League since 2017. The others?” McMahon asked. “Wemby, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum. No guarantees, but not bad company to be in.”

Edgecombe was the third-overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. He has been added to an exciting young core that already boasts Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain. Nevertheless, it would appear that Edgecombe is going to bring something different to the Sixers’ rotation, primarily due to his high-level athleticism and the pace at which he approaches the game.

Grimes and Sixers Remain Far Apart in Negotiations

With Edgecombe’s addition to the Sixers roster, Quentin Grimes’ value to the franchise has likely taken a blow. Grimes is a restricted free agent this summer, but has yet to sign a new deal.

According to The Athletic’s Kelly Iko and Tony Jones, there has been “little to no movement” in negotiations between the two sides.

“To this point, there has been little to no movement with restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes and the Philadelphia 76ers, league sources tell myself and
@Tjonesonthenba. The two sides are hoping to continue communication in the coming days,” Iko reported via X.

Grimes had a strong stretch of play after joining the Sixers midway through last season. However, once the roster is back to full strength, he’s unlikely to have such a broad scope in his role, which will undoubtedly affect his ability to replicate those performances.

Patrick Beverley Sends Message to Grimes

During a recent episode of “The Pat Bev Podcast,” the former Sixers guard Patrick Beverley shared his thoughts on Grimes’ current asking price.

Yeah, he needs to relax,” Beverley said. “I’m all with the homies getting paid, but let’s be realistic. Go ahead and get a two-year. Put some more work in. Put some more of that joy back in the game like you’ve been doing…I don’t think he’ll get $25 million, right? We’ve seen what he’s done. I think he can go to a younger team and be explosive off the bench. But, I don’t know if 25 is the number. I hope he gets 25, but I don’t think 25 is the number for Quentin Grimes.”

Grimes would be wise to sign a new deal this summer. If he opts to sign his qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, he could lose some of his barganing power. After all, he will face significant competition for minutes if everyone is healthy, and that will limit what he can do on the court compared to his past season.
