Son of NFL Legend Could Be Among The First Cuts At Bills Training Camp

After the 2024 NFL Draft concluded, the Buffalo Bills signed one of the top undrafted free agents on the market. The Bills signed Southern Miss running back Frank Gore Jr.

Bills Added Frank Gore Jr. To The Team In 2024

Gore Jr. is the son of former NFL legend Frank Gore, who played 16 years for five different teams. One day, Gore will have his name in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and his son will try to follow in his footsteps.

Gore Jr. has a long way to go to be like his father, and it starts with trying to make the Bills’ active roster.

Buffalo’s running back depth chart is loaded with James Cook, Ty Johnson, and Ray Davis. Usually, teams will keep three running backs on the 53-man roster, so Gore will likely be the odd man out.

Gore Could Be Cut This Fall

Michael Haney from Fansided thinks Gore is one of the first notable cuts that will happen after training camp.

“Gore Jr. showed flashes of effective play in his three preseason appearances, averaging almost five yards per attempt and scoring a touchdown. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to earn him a spot on Buffalo’s final roster. Gore Jr. was waived and landed on the Bills’ practice squad,” Haney wrote. “One year later, he’s fighting to make the roster again. But this time, he faces an even bigger challenge. Gore Jr. is hoping to work his way into a crowded group of Bills running backs. James Cook is set to remain the Bills’ starter, and they already have strong depth behind him.”

“Second-year back Ray Davis could step into a bigger role this season, and Ty Johnson has excelled as a third-down back. Buffalo even signed Darrynton Evans in free agency to round out the group. There’s just not room for Gore Jr. to earn a roster spot. He would have to beat out Evans, a much more established back. Barring a preseason miracle, Gore Jr. is set to fall short of Buffalo’s final roster once again,” Haney added.

James Cook Could Holdout

There have been some turns in the Bills’ running back room the last few days, with Cook not practicing. The 25-year-old running back is looking for a new contract and has been playing the last week. However, on Sunday, he didn’t participate, and he did the same on Monday.

If Cook is going to hold out now until he gets a new deal, Gore could end up playing his way into a roster spot.

If Cook doesn’t suit up against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1, that could leave an opening for Gore.

It will still be a long shot for Gore to make the roster even if Cook holds out because the Bills will likely sign a free agent running back to help out the room.

Gore has three preseason games to show off his talents. If he isn’t a member of the Bills this season, then he could be picked up on the practice squad or even make another NFL team’s active roster.
