Sports Doctor Issues Statement After Spurs Star Victor Wembanyama Suffers Injury

On Monday night, the San Antonio Spurs beat the Philadelphia 76ers by a score of a 115-102.

Before exiting with an injury, Victor Wembanyama finished with 17 points, five rebounds, one assist and three blocks while shooting 7/11 from the field in 16 minutes of playing time.

Jared Weiss of The Athletic wrote: “Victor Wembanyama (left rib contusion) has been ruled out for the rest of the night by the Spurs after he took a fall in the first half. He played 16 minutes, so this counts as one of his two “near-miss” exemptions to the 20-minute threshold on the 65-game rule.”

Sports Doctor Issues Statement After Wembanyama Injury

After the game, a notable sports doctor (Jesse Morse, M.D.) sent out a post with his thoughts on the injury.

Morse wrote: “Victor Wembanyama Suffered a rib contusion on the left side on this play. Rib injuries are painful! There’s basically 5 options: 1. Rib contusion/bruise 2. Rib cartilage injury 3. Rib fracture 4. Rib fracture + rib cartilage injury 5. Rib fracture + organ injury (lung) Best case scenario his X-rays, MRI and CT scan are negative and he has a rib contusion. The Spurs have 3 games left, and I believe he needs to play in 1 of the 3 in order to qualify for the 65-game rule (20+ minutes). If this is anything more than that, he’s likely to miss all 3 games and potentially more depending on the diagnosis and severity.”

Wembanyama is in the middle of an incredible season where he has established himself as one of the best seven players in the league.

He is averaging 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 3.1 blocks per contest while shooting 51.0% from the field and 35.0% from three-point range in 63 games.

Matt Guzman of San Antonio Spurs OnSI wrote: “#Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said it was a positive from his perspective that Victor Wembanyama came back into the game initially, but doesn’t know much on the severity.”
