Spurs Trade Idea Lands Two-Time MVP to Pair up With Victor Wembanyama

The San Antonio Spurs are in one of the most unique positions across the entire NBA.

They boast one of the league’s youngest rosters, littered with potential All-Star talent.

Victor Wembanyama, of course, is projected to be one of the five best players in basketball once he reaches his full potential.

However, years of high draft picks have left them with several lottery players, such as Jeremy Sochan, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Carter Bryant.

While the Spurs could wait and allow their young nucleus to develop into premier NBA talent, they could also cash in their chips now and use some of these budding stars in trades to land a proven star.

And what better star to pair up with Wembanyama than Giannis Antetokounmpo?

Spurs Blockbuster Trade Proposal Lands Giannis Antetokounmpo

In a trade idea first proposed by Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey, the San Antonio Spurs would mortgage part of their future to acquire Milwaukee Bucks two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

San Antonio Spurs receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo

Milwaukee Bucks receive: Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, 2026 first-round pick, 2028 first-round pick, 2030 first-round pick (via MIN), 2031 first-round pick (via SAC)

“There’s a solid argument to sort of slow-play the team-building process around Wemby. He’s only 21. There’s plenty of time to craft a title-contending roster before he reaches his prime,” wrote Bailey.

“But last season’s De’Aaron Fox trade suggests the Spurs may be a bit more anxious to contend than they were prior to Wembanyama’s arrival. And if that led to a trio of Fox, Wemby and Giannis, San Antonio would instantly vault onto the contenders’ tier.”

While giving up Vassell, Harper, and Castle, along with four first-round picks, may be a tough pill to swallow, the Spurs are in a position to win now with Wembanyama still on his rookie contract.

Not only would the big-man duo dominate defensively, but offensively, they would create mismatches on the floor not seen in San Antonio since the days of Tim Duncan and David Robinson.

The Spurs would likely be making deep playoff runs yearly anyway, placing those first-round draft picks in the late 20s, rendering them more palatable to part with.

Why the Bucks Make the Trade

When analyzing the trade proposal, Bailey laid out why the Milwaukee Bucks would be willing to make this deal.

“Over the last 26 games of his Rookie of the Year-winning campaign, Stephon Castle averaged 19.4 points, 5.6 assists and 5.2 rebounds. And before being selected second overall this past summer, Harper averaged 19.4 points and 4.0 assists as a freshman at Rutgers,” Bailey explained.

“Together, they’d instantly form one of the most intriguing, offensively dynamic and defensively versatile young backcourts in the East.”

Milwaukee would certainly have one of the brightest futures in the aftermath of this trade, landing themselves cornerstone players to develop and build their team around.

And after years of exhausting premier draft capital to build a contender around Antetokounmpo, they can finally restock their shelves with draft picks, albeit some more valuable than others.

“Of course, as is almost always the case in star trades, the picks might be as important as the players.”

“And while those first two from the Spurs might not have a ton of value (thanks to how good San Antonio would be after this deal), the pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves is a wild card, and the one from the Sacramento Kings, given their organizational track record, could be basketball gold.”
