The San Francisco 49ers shed a lot of talent this offseason, and early in training camp, their wide receiver depth chart has taken some hits. Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall both have begun training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, while Jauan Jennings has made it clear he wants to be traded if the 49ers don’t give him a new contract (although he is practicing for the time being).
That has left quarterback Brock Purdy a bit shorthanded to this point, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the front office were to add some talent at this spot ahead of the start of the season. One guy they brought in for a free agent visit a while back is Gabe Davis, and based on his latest comments, he sounds very interested in signing with San Francisco.
Gabe Davis Makes Thoughts on Signing With 49ers Extremely Clear
Davis latched on with the Buffalo Bills as a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he gradually turned himself into the team’s No. 2 receiver. With Davis acting as the big-play threat alongside Stefon Diggs, the Bills’ offense became very tough to stop as Josh Allen turned himself into one of the top quarterbacks in the league.
After the 2023 season, Davis signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he never found his footing with them in 2024. In 10 games, Davis caught just 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns before he suffered a torn meniscus, which cut his season short. With the Jaguars leaning into their youth, relying on Brian Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter, they opted to release Davis in May.
Since then, Davis has been a free agent, and while he hasn’t signed with anyone just yet, interest in his services is beginning to increase. He visited with the 49ers back in May shortly after his release, and they certainly could use a little extra help at wide receiver. Davis appears to be interested in playing for them, as he made his thoughts on potentially landing with San Fran very clear after his visit.
“San Fran is definitely a spot I’m looking at,” Davis said on “Up & Adams.” “[Kyle] Shanahan’s the man. He knows how to call an offense. They just got a lot of great weapons around there … Definitely a team that interests me because I like to be around great players.”
Should the 49ers Sign Gabe Davis?

At this stage of the game, it couldn’t hurt for the 49ers to take a flier on Davis. He isn’t far removed from his best season in 2022, when he caught 48 passes for 836 yards and seven touchdowns, so he still likely has something to offer for a wide receiver-needy team like San Francisco. Plus, their depth chart at this spot isn’t in great shape right now, so if nothing else, he’d add some much-needed competition for the Niners during training camp.
The problem is that, with Pearsall close to a return and Jennings looking for a new deal, there may not be room for Davis come the start of the season. The front office could be better off using its cap space to extend Jennings, rather than taking a shot on Davis. Depending on how things shake out over the next few days, though, Davis could ultimately get his wish and land with the 49ers.
