No NFL team can ever have enough depth. That includes even a speciality position such as long snapper, which the Pittsburgh Steelers addressed with the signing of Cal Adomitis on Friday.
The Steelers announced adding Adomitis to their practice squad. To make room for the long snapper, the team released linebacker Kana’i Mauga.
Adomitis signing with the Steelers is a homecoming. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Adomitis played high school football for local powerhouse Central Catholic. He also went to Pitt from 2017-21.
During his NFL career, Adomitis has played for the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles.
Steelers Sign Long Snapper Cal Adomitis
Although he went undrafted as a long snapper in the 2022 class, Adomitis hasn’t had too much trouble finding a job in the NFL.
The Bengals signed Adomitis as an undrafted free agent. He made his NFL debut against the Dallas Cowboys during Week 2 of his rookie season.
Adomitis played in 15 games as a rookie. He then also appeared in three playoff contests.
The 27-year-old spent three seasons with the Bengals. He appeared in 49 games with Cincinnati, always playing on special teams.
Adomitis joined the Eagles in September, which was about a month after the Bengals waived him. He played in nine games with Philadelphia before the Eagles also waived him.
In four NFL seasons, Adomitis has never played on offense or defense. It’s unlikely he will show anymore versatility now with the Steelers.
But the team appears to be adding insurance for starting long snapper Christian Kuntz, who is on the injury report this week. Kuntz was limited in practice Thursday because of a knee injury.
The 31-year-old has been Pittsburgh’s long snapper in every game since the start of the 2021 season. The past few games, though, Kuntz has delivered a couple low snaps to punter Corliss Waitman.
It’s not clear if Kuntz’s low snaps, which Waitman still caught, were related to his injury. Steelers Depot’s Alex Kozora called attention to Kuntz’s low snaps on X this past week.
“Christian Kuntz has done a nice job on punt coverage this year, but snaps have to be better,” Kozora wrote. “Two the last two weeks have been way too low.
“Can’t have a mistake like this cost the team in a playoff push.”
Steelers Part Ways With LB Kana’i Mauga
Mauga’s tenure with the Steelers ended Friday to create space for Adomitis. Pittsburgh signed Mauga to its practice squad about two and a half weeks ago.
The 25-year-old linebacker last appeared in an NFL regular season game last year. After going undrafted, Mauga played 17 games for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2023-24.
Mauga posted six combined tackles while mostly playing special teams. In 2024, he didn’t play on defense at all while lining up for 251 special teams snaps.
The Steelers will visit the Detroit Lions during Week 16 on Sunday. Both teams will enter the matchup 8-6.
Detroit badly needs the win to stay alive in the very competitive NFC playoff picture. At 8-6, the Steelers sit in a good spot in first place of the AFC North. The Steelers, though, can increase the likelihood of clinching the division before Week 18 with a win.
