Steelers Bring Back Veteran Playmaker Days After Release

Veteran running back Trey Sermon was the odd-man out when the Pittsburgh Steelers had to create an opening for rookie quarterback Will Howard to come off injured reserve. But two days later, Sermon is back with the Steelers on the practice squad.

The team announced the running back’s return to the practice squad Friday morning.

“The Steelers signed running back Trey Sermon to the practice squad,” wrote Steelers.com’s Teresa Varley.

“Sermon was originally signed following a tryout during the Steelers rookie minicamp in 2025 and has spent time on the practice squad and 53-man roster this season. He was elevated for the Patriots, Vikings and Colts games and was on the 53-man roster for the Chargers game.

In four games, Sermon has only played one offensive snap for the Steelers this season. But he has helped return kickoffs, playing 47 snaps on special teams.

Sermon has returned two kickoffs for 51 yards.

Steelers Re-Sign RB Trey Sermon to Practice Squad

The Steelers brought back Sermon on the practice squad after waiving him Wednesday. The team moved on from Sermon to place Howard onto the active roster.

Pittsburgh also signed cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. and waived safety Darrick Forrest the same day.

But the running back cleared waivers and was then able to re-join the Steelers practice squad.

That’s where Sermon has been most of this season. The Steelers only just signed him to the active roster before Week 10.

In five NFL seasons, Sermon has posted 505 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He’s also caught 22 passes for 138 yards.

As previously mentioned, the Steelers have only utilized Sermon on special teams. He returned his first kickoff for 23 yards with the Indianapolis Colts last season.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Sermon at No. 88 overall in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. After just one year with the 49ers, the team waived him before the 2022 campaign.

The Philadelphia Eagles claimed Sermon off waivers. Following one season with the Eagles, Sermon spent two years with the Colts.

A Marietta, Georgia native, Sermon ran for 2,946 yards while averaging 6.5 yards per carry over four college seasons with Oklahoma and Ohio State from 2017-20.
