The Pittsburgh Steelers have plenty of time to overcome their recent losing stretch. The team has lost three of the past four games, but there are seven weeks remaining. However, one former NFL general manager pointed to a comment from defensive lineman and captain Cameron Heyward and argued that brighter days might not be ahead for the Steelers this season.
Ex-Buffalo Bills general manager and Pittsburgh native Doug Whaley explained why one sentence from Heyward right after Week 10 could be a disturbing sign.
“This is highly alarming, especially when you think about what came out of his mouth after the Green Bay game when he was talking about buy-in,” Whaley said, via Steelers Depot’s Matthew Marczi. “When you’re talking about trust and buy-in, that to me is alarming because that is the foundation of what is being preached over at 3400 South Water Street.”
Heyward didn’t discuss “buy-in” after Week 10. But the All-Pro suggested with a question Sunday night that not all of his teammates know their assignments on every play.
The comment came after the Steelers lost to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday 25-10.
Cameron Heyward Questions Whether Steelers Players Know Assignments?
To fully understand Whaley’s assessment of Heyward’s comment, it’s important to return to Heyward’s full quote.
“I’m not looking for an excuse,” Heyward said Sunday night, via Steelers Depot’s Alex Kozora. “I’m looking to just play better.
“We talk about it, but do we really know what we’re doing, play in and play out? Do we trust the guy next to us? Defense, offense, do we trust each other to be in the right spots to make plays.”
Heyward didn’t answer yes to his own rhetorical questions. But the defensive lineman proposing the questions still set off alarm bells for Whaley.
However, Steelers Nation could need to take what Whaley said with a grain of salt.
“Whaley may well be sensationalizing Heyward’s comments beyond their intention,” wrote Marczi.
That has happened previously. Not with Whaley, but after a loss against the Kansas City Chiefs last December, Heyward clarify one of his answers that he said the media misconstrued.
“When 10 guys do their job and one guy doesn’t, we are screwed,” Heyward said to the media, via Steelers insider Mark Kaboly on December 25.
