Steph Curry’s Wife, Ayesha, Reveals Who Said ‘I Love You’ First

Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry and his wife, Ayesha Curry, met when they were 15 and 14, respectively, but their romance didn’t blossom until the four-time NBA champion was a sophomore at Davidson.

By 2009, when Curry had to decide between staying in college for a senior year and declaring for the NBA Draft, Ayesha was there by his side, helping him navigate uncharted waters. It was around this time that the young couple knew they were destined to end up together, which they did by tying the knot in 2011.

So, who uttered the words “I love you” first? In a candid interview with Alex Cooper of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Ayesha spilled the tea on who professed their love first.

“Me,” Ayesha responded before delving into the moment she uttered the words.

“I, a hundred percent, said ‘I love you’ first,” she recalled. “I was visiting him at school and getting ready to leave to go back to my mom’s house. And I said it, and he didn’t say it back, and he just stared at me, and my eyes started to well up. He was like, ‘Can I please explain?’ And I’m like, ‘Okay.’

Why Steph Didn’t Say ‘I Love You’ Back

Ayesha then explained why Steph didn’t reciprocate the words immediately.

“He’s like, ‘I said, ‘I love you’ to somebody in the past and I didn’t mean it.’ He said, ‘And I regret it.’ And he is like, ‘I just wanna be sure that when I say it again, you know that I mean it.’

“And in the moment, I was like ‘BS.’ But, now, obviously, I realize he was serious. And a few, like a month later, we’re sitting watching “Seven Pounds.” And when they say like “The human heart, seven pounds,” he literally, my whole family’s in the room by the way, sitting watching this movie, he leans over my ear and he’s like, ‘I love you.’ And I’m like happy, but I’m also like, “What?” Sitting next to my uncle. What is happening?”

While Ayesha was stunned by Steph’s timing in saying it, she understood his reasoning to be spontaneous.

“I mean, if he’s gonna do one thing, he’s gonna make it memorable,” she added.

Ayesha Wanted Steph to Stay in School

During the interview, Ayesha Curry revealed she wanted her future husband to complete his senior year in college rather than declare for the NBA Draft in 2009.

But why exactly did she want him to stay in college?

“So the why is I didn’t grow up surrounded by people who went to college. That for me was like, ‘Wow, what a blessing. Like, you get to go to college, you get to have an education, like why would you leave?’ So, and then not coming from that sports background and understanding how, like, rare the opportunity he had was, I was like, ‘Yeah, stay at school,’” she recalled.

Steph would choose to ignore his then-girlfriend’s advice and declare for the NBA Draft. Ayesha wasn’t happy, but respected his decision and supported him.

“I’m glad he decided to leave, and then he ended up finishing anyway and has gone on to do tremendous, incredible, cool shit that we never thought would happen. So it’s great.”
