“Strong” Candidate For San Francisco Giants Manager Job Emerges

On Sunday October 5, 2025, trusted MLB insider Jon Heyman reported he keeps hearing Nick Hundley is “strongly in the mix” for the San Francisco Giants’ manager job. 

The Giants fired former manager Bob Melvin back on Monday September 29, 2025. 

Hundley, 42, is a former MLB catcher who is currently a front office executive with the Texas Rangers. He previously played for the Giants from 2017-18, backing up former Giants All-Star catcher and current President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey. 

Hundley won the Willie Mac Award with the Giants, given annually to the most inspirational player on the Giants, in 2017.

Why The Hundley Rumors Make Sense

Everyone seems pretty certain that Buster Posey wants to hire a catcher as the next manager of the San Francisco Giants. 

There’s a lot of precedent for this in San Francisco. Bob Melvin is a former catcher, so was Bruce Bochy. It’s long been a school of thought that because of the leadership and high baseball IQ that the catcher position demands in the MLB, that retired catchers make good managers. 

Sure enough, most of the rumored candidates for San Francisco’s manager position have been catchers. All-Star and World Series Champion former catcher Kurt Suzuki just interviewed with the Giants for the manager job. Amid Curt Casali’s official retirement, many people think he will be a candidate as well. 

Posey himself is obviously going to feel connected to any catcher that he interviews because of their shared experience being behind the dish. And Hundley is more connected to Posey than anyone – they literally played catcher for the same team for two years. 

Hundley also recently returned to San Francisco for the 2025 Willie Mac Award ceremony, despite the fact that the Rangers currently employ him. Posey could have already had him in mind and been having discussions with him before Melvin was even fired. 

Hundley has gained massive attention and respect throughout the baseball world for what he’s done with the Rangers, and the Rangers won’t be hiring him. They hired Skip Schumaker to be their next manager instead.

If The Giants Don’t Hire Hundley, Here’s Why 

One potential roadblock to the Giants as they consider hiring Hundley is that he’s just not experienced. 

Hundley has never been an MLB manager before. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be successful, but there are hundreds of more experienced coaching candidates out there. 

Another issue is that the Giants may feel Hundley is too similar to Bob Melvin. A former catcher who played for the Giants…feels a bit like playing the same tune with a different instrument. Bruce Bochy was also a former catcher and the Giants are decidedly not hiring him back, according to Posey. 

Hundley is much younger and theoretically more energetic and relatable for players than each of those two guys, but if San Francisco hired him and the Giants performed mediocre or worse, Giants fans would quickly tire of former catchers who played for their team. That ire could extend to Posey if he’s not careful. 

Gabe Kapler, the Giants’ other recent manager, is young and decidedly not a former Giant nor a former catcher. He had one excellent season in 2021 and the rest of his tenure from 2020-23 looked a lot like Melvin’s. 

So there’s obviously no exact science in regard to the background that would be perfect for the Giants’ next manager. Every person is a case by case basis, and Posey needs to do his due diligence in interviews to find which one he believes will get the most out of the Giants’ players.
