Despite bringing home the NFL’s most coveted individual award, Buffalo Bills’ reigning MVP Josh Allen falls just short of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in ESPN’s insider poll.
The poll gets responses from nearly 80 NFL executives and scouts. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler then tallies the votes and compiles a top ten list at every position. Once again, Allen came in second place.
“He’s done everything,” an NFC personnel executive told Fowler. “He’s answered every test. He makes less mistakes and takes care of the ball. Only thing left to do is win it all.”
“He’s still got that risk-taking to his game and the occasional head-scratching play, but he’s taking more calculated risks than wild risks, which is helping his overall play,” a different NFL personnel evaluator told Fowler.
James Cook and Dion Dawkins Only Other Bills to Make Poll
Fowler’s poll rated every single position, tackles, IOL, off-ball linebackers, edge rushers, etc. Of all the other players on the Bills roster, only two more landed on this list.
The next highest ranking belonged to James Cook. Cook had never made the list before, last year was the closest he came earning an honorable mention. This year he clocked in at number eight.
Cook finished behind Christian McCafferey, who ranked fifth, despite only tallying 50 carries last season.
Next was Dion Dawkins. Dawkins also finished eighth in the offensive tackles ranking. Like Cook, he made his first entrance onto the list this season.
“Just very steady, stayed healthy, great leader,” an AFC executive said. “I’ve just always liked him — probably better football makeup than actual talent.”
Von Miller Signs With Washington Commanders
Long time Buffalo Bill and future NFL Hall of Famer, Von Miller, announced Wednesday that he would be joining the rising NFC power Washington Commanders.
The Commanders are signing the 36-year-old to a one year, $6.1 million contract.
The two-time Super Bowl champion played in 36 games for the Bills, recording 14 sacks.
Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas Weighs in on James Cook Contract
James Cook’s contract drama has become the focal point of the Bills 2025 offseason. So much so that it has NFL legends weighing in on the topic.
On Thursday, Nick Wojton of USA Today circulated a video from earlier this month of legendary runningback Thurman Thomas giving his two cents on the contract dilemma.
In the video Thomas says he hopes things don’t end ugly, but if Cook wants out, give him what he wants.
“If this is gonna be is last year, then let it be his last year. Make sure that you play him… over the past couple years, he’s been the second best player on the football team,” Thomas said.
He concluded by saying that he “wants James to get his money”, but understands that by having a quarterback like Josh Allen, the necessity for a league best running back goes down.
Former Bill Tremaine Edmunds Names League’s Most Overpriced LB
Former first round pick of the Buffalo Bills, Tremaine Edmunds, was identified as the NFL’s most over paid linebacker in a recent Bleacher Report list. He has tallied more than 100 tackles every year since entering the league, but at a 72 million dollar price tag, BR is struggling to find the worth.
His deal is a four-year contract that sees the LB bringing home $18 million annually for the Chicago Bears. BR’s Gary Davenport did not pull any punches when analyzing the situation.
“Annual salary is the only place you’ll see Edmunds compared to Warner. Edmunds is what he is: a good-but-not-great linebacker who is wildly overpaid,” Davenport writes.
“His pact was a bad contract when it was signed. It hasn’t aged well, either. But at least the Bears can get out of it in 2026 with a relatively minimal dead cap hit.”
