The TCU Horned Frogs and head coach Sonny Dykes have agreed to a multi-year contract extension. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported to extension.
Dykes had previously been under contract through the 2028 season at a salary of $7 million annually. Thamel did not have immediate details on his new contract extension, beyond the fact that it is a multi-year deal. TCU is a private university, which means the details of the deal are not subject to public records requests.
“I am appreciative and thankful to Mike Buddie, Chancellor Daniel Pullin, and our administration for their belief and support of our program,” Dykes said in a press release. “The opportunity to pursue a national championship, the College Football Playoff, and Big 12 championships exists right here in Fort Worth, and my family and I, as well as our entire staff, are excited to continue that pursuit as Horned Frogs.”
Dykes first landed at TCU in 2022, coming over from rival SMU. He got off to a fast start there, playing for a national championship in his first season there. Since then, Dykes has put together a 36-17 record in four seasons there. That’s the most games won of any Big 12 team since 2022.
Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti and Sonny Dykes Got Into a War of Words

The Transfer Portal hit the TCU Horned Frogs this offseason, losing starting quarterback Josh Hoover to the Indiana Hoosiers. Shortly after that, Sonny Dykes made some comments about Hoover that raised eyebrows regarding his turnovers.
“Look, numbers are numbers and stats are stats,” Dykes said. “I think Josh started 31 games here as a quarterback, and we turned the ball over 40 — he turned the ball over 42 times in those 31 starts. And you look at Gordy was the offensive coordinator last year at Connecticut, and their quarterback turned it over twice.”
That line ended up getting back to Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti. He’d quickly respond, seemingly taking a shot at the TCU program.
“We’re excited about Josh, first of all, let me be clear about that,” Cignetti said. “He’s got a body of work in terms of winning football games, passing yards, touchdown passes. Although, got to clean up some of the turnovers, obviously, which Coach Dykes made light of. But when Josh got here, he met his two new best friends: a great defense and a really good run game. And he was never the same after that.”
Indiana and TCU aren’t scheduled to play in 2026, so they can’t sort this debate out on the field. However, it will be pretty clear if Hoover is the right quarterback for Indiana quickly in Big Ten play.

TCU and Sonny Dykes have a plan to replace Josh Hoover in 2026. The Horned Frogs dipped into the Transfer Portal, landing Jaden Craig, who was transferring after graduating from Harvard, where he had been a star at the FCS level, and was seen as a potential NFL Draft pick.
In 2025, Craig had 2,869 passing yards and 25 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. He would add 78 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns as well.
TCU will open the season in Ireland for a neutral site game against North Carolina on August 29th. That’s their only non-conference game against a Power Four opponent next season. Later, on September 26th, TCU will open Big 12 play on the road against UCF.
