In the twilight of their careers, veteran players often chase one last chance to win the Super Bowl by joining a contender. Tyler Lockett knows the 2025 Tennessee Titans aren’t the team for that, which is why the 33-year-old wide receiver asked for a release earlier today. The Titans granted the request, and Lockett will be free to sign with another team on Wednesday, Oct. 22. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first broke the news on Twitter.
Lockett, an 11-year veteran, has seen little action in Tennessee this season. Through seven games, he has 10 receptions for 70 yards. He previously put together a decade’s worth of productive seasons for the Seattle Seahawks. Over his career, Lockett has 671 receptions for 8,664 yards and 61 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl in 2015 as a rookie and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2016 and 2017.
Teams That May Be Interested in Lockett
While Lockett’s production has been subpar this year and declined last season, possibly due to his age or the coinciding rise of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, he’ll likely attract interest from several teams. Some of the top potential landing spots include:
- Pittsburgh Steelers: Rumors have circulated that the Steelers (4-2) are interested in adding a receiver alongside D.K. Metcalf. Given his savvy and experience, Lockett could quickly gel with the ever-particular Aaron Rodgers.
- New York Giants: The Giants have also been rumored to be in the receiver market after losing Malik Nabers to a season-ending knee injury. Whether or not the Giants are true playoff contenders, adding a veteran receiver could benefit quarterback Jaxson Dart’s development.
- New England Patriots: Some fans might be surprised that the Patriots are buyers at the trade deadline this season. The Pats have a fairly deep receiving room but no go-to superstar pass catcher. Lockett isn’t that game-changing option they need, but depth never hurts.
- Seattle Seahawks: Veterans often find their way back home, and with the Seahawks competing in a crowded NFC West, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Lockett returned to Seattle.
How Lockett’s Release Affects the Titans
Lockett was on a one-year, $4 million deal. Even at the start of the season, he wasn’t expected to be the dependable 1,000-yard machine like he was in the past. It’s usually worthwhile to roster veteran receivers when the quarterback is a rookie, in the case of Cam Ward, but plenty of other pass-catching options remain in Tennessee. Unfortunately, none of them, at least at the moment, are playing at an above-average level.
Chimere Dike is coming off a solid game against the Patriots in which he racked up 70 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches. Before that, he had a paltry 26 receiving yards on the entire season. Rookie Elic Ayomanor has shown flashes of talent, especially for a fourth-round pick, but is still waiting on a breakout performance. The projected No. 1 receiver, Calvin Ridley, has been up and down this season–but that’s the case for the entire Titans offense. In six games (one of which he left early with an injury), Ridley has 16 catches, 290 receiving yards, and no touchdowns. A small bright spot is tight end Chig Okonkwo, whose 23 receptions lead the team.
Lockett’s release isn’t a significant loss for the Titans, but it could be a win for him.
